Reward- and threat-related neural function associated with risk and presence of depression in adolescents: a study using a composite risk score in Brazil

Leehyun Yoon et al.

Summary: This study focused on examining neural activity and connectivity associated with risk and depression in Brazilian adolescents using a composite risk score. The findings revealed elevated ventral striatum activity in depressed adolescents compared to high-risk adolescents during punishment, as well as reduced reward-related activity in the lateral prefrontal cortex in patients and high-risk adolescents. Additionally, depressed and high-risk adolescents showed reduced threat-related amygdala connectivity with multiple brain regions compared to low-risk adolescents.

Identifying Adolescents at Risk for Depression: A Prediction Score Performance in Cohorts Based in 3 Different Continents

Thiago Botter-Maio Rocha et al.

Summary: This study aimed to develop a multivariable prognostic model to predict depressive disorder diagnosis at age 18 using sociodemographic variables from adolescents at age 15, and evaluate its generalizability in two samples from diverse socioeconomic and cultural settings. There were significant discrepancies between the samples, impacting the external prognostic performance of the model, but implementing recommended strategies improved the model's calibration in both samples.

Influences of early-life stress on frontolimbic circuitry: Harnessing a dimensional approach to elucidate the effects of heterogeneity in stress exposure

Emily M. Cohodes et al.

Summary: Early-life stress has profound and lasting effects on cognitive, social, emotional, and physical health, with the frontolimbic circuitry particularly susceptible to these effects. Recent studies have shifted towards a dimensional approach, considering factors like timing, type, severity, controllability, predictability of stress, and caregiver involvement to understand the variability in outcomes related to stress exposure.

Predicting the risk of depression among adolescents in Nepal using a model developed in Brazil: the IDEA Project

Rachel Brathwaite et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the ability of a depression prediction model developed in Brazil to predict individualized risk of depression among adolescents in Nepal. The model demonstrated good calibration, overall performance, and discrimination ability in the Nepali cohort, showing promise for wider generalizability to other socio-culturally diverse populations in different geographical regions.

Mind the brain gap: The worldwide distribution of neuroimaging research on adolescent depression

Lucas Battel et al.

Summary: Adolescents make up a quarter of the global population, with the majority living in low- and middle-income countries. Depression incidence increases significantly during adolescence, yet most research on adolescent depression is conducted in high-income countries. Disparity exists between the number of neuroimaging studies on adolescent depression conducted in different income groups, with potential for unique insights by comparing findings across populations.

The Identifying Depression Early in Adolescence Risk Stratified Cohort (IDEA-RiSCo): Rationale, Methods, and Baseline Characteristics

Christian Kieling et al.

Summary: This study aimed to stratify risk for developing depression in adolescents using a composite risk score. By recruiting a cohort enriched for low and high depression risk, as well as adolescents with untreated major depressive episode, the study examined multiple neurobiological, psychological, and environmental measures related to depression risk. Results showed that individuals at high risk for depression exhibited worse indicators in psychopathology and exposure to negative events compared to low-risk individuals.
