Subsurface Warm Biases in the Tropical Atlantic and Their Attributions to the Role of Wind Forcing and Ocean Vertical Mixing

Qiushi Zhang et al.

Summary: Realistic ocean subsurface simulations are crucial for climate prediction, but current models still have substantial biases. This study investigates subsurface biases in the tropical Atlantic Ocean and explores two potential origins, wind forcing and vertical mixing parameterization. The study finds that adjusting prescribed wind fields and reducing background diffusivity can reduce the warm biases. Heat-budget analysis shows that the improved simulations are due to enhanced cooling effect by constraining vertical mixing diffusivity.
