Elucidating the enhanced photoelectrochemical performance of zinc-blende ZnS/wurtzite ZnO heterojunction and adsorption of water molecules by molecular dynamics simulations

Ronald Vargas et al.

Summary: The study suggests that depositing hydrothermally synthesized ZnO onto ZnS-containing industrial waste can significantly enhance UV-light-induced photocurrent. This enhancement is achieved through the formation of a ZnS-IW@ZnO heterojunction. Molecular modeling calculations demonstrate that the incorporation of ZnO promotes the adsorption of water molecules, leading to the formation of a monolayer and further enhancing the effect of the heterojunction.

Unraveling the photoelectrochemical behavior of Ni-modi fi ed ZnO and TiO 2 thin fi lms fabricated by RF magnetron sputtering

Mirabbos Hojamberdiev et al.

Summary: Zinc oxide (ZnO) and titanium oxide (TiO2) thin films were fabricated by radio frequency magnetron sputtering with the introduction of nickel to enhance their photoelectrochemical performance. The presence of nickel changed the crystal orientation of ZnO and inhibited phase transformation in TiO2, leading to improved optoelectronic features. The interaction of Ni with ZnO and TiO2 thin films, as well as the effect on photon absorption and charge carrier collection, were investigated to tailor the optoelectronic properties for efficient light-harvesting materials.

Core-Shell Double Doping of Zn and Ca on β-Ga2O3 Photocatalysts for Remarkable Water Splitting

Akira Yamakata et al.

Summary: The dual doping of Zn and Ca in polycrystalline beta-Ga2O3 photocatalysts effectively enhances the photocatalytic activity, achieving a quantum efficiency of 71% under 254 nm illumination. The induced concentration gradient of the dopants inhibits recombination and assists trapped electrons to diffuse from bulk to surface, accelerating surface reactions. This cooperative effect provides an attractive strategy to enhance photocatalytic activity, applicable to a variety of photocatalysts.

Ultrafast Spectroscopy of Plasmonic Titanium Nitride Nanoparticle Lattices

Thaddeus Reese et al.

Summary: In this study, the differences in optical properties between TiN nanoparticles supporting surface lattice resonances (SLRs) and localized surface plasmons (LSPs) were investigated, revealing asymmetric broadening at ps-time scales in SLRs compared to symmetric peak broadening in LSPs. The TiN nanoparticle arrays showed robustness under extreme conditions, withstanding pump fluences exceeding 50 mJ/cm(2) for over half an hour with minimal change in bleach wavelength.

Bubble-induced convection stabilizes the local pH during solar water splitting in neutral pH electrolytes

Keisuke Obata et al.

Summary: The study introduces Euler-Euler multiphase fluid dynamics simulations to investigate the interplay between convection driven by the (photo)electrochemical reactions and the resulting pH gradient. Bubble-induced convection is found to dominate fluid dynamics in regions close to the electrodes and significantly suppress the local pH gradient. The negative effects such as surface coverage by gas bubbles and ohmic loss need to be minimized to fully capitalize on the beneficial contribution from bubble-induced convection.
