Strategies and Perspectives to Catch the Missing Pieces in Energy-Efficient Hydrogen Evolution Reaction in Alkaline Media

Sengeni Anantharaj et al.

Summary: Transition metal hydroxides and their heterostructures have been identified as highly active electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction in alkaline water electrolysis. The lattice hydroxide anions in metal hydroxides enhance the catalytic activity, but their poor electronic conductivity has been a concern. Advancements in heterostructured hydroxide materials with metallic and/or semiconducting phases have overcome this limitation, making them essential for energy-efficient alkaline HER.

Constructing Atomic Heterometallic Sites in Ultrathin Nickel-Incorporated Cobalt Phosphide Nanosheets via a Boron-Assisted Strategy for Highly Efficient Water Splitting

Yufei Zhao et al.

Summary: This study fabricates ultrathin nickel-incorporated cobalt phosphide porous nano-sheets using a boron-assisted method, presenting a novel atomic heterometallic site for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction. The optimized material shows low overpotentials for both reactions, indicating a direct influence of center Ni atoms on adjacent Co/P atoms. These findings provide fundamental insights into the correlation between atomic structures and catalytic activity for water splitting.

Make it stereoscopic: interfacial design for full-temperature adaptive flexible zinc-air batteries

Zengxia Pei et al.

Summary: The structure of the air-cathode significantly influences the temperature adaptability of flexible zinc-air batteries, and an integrated stereoscopic air-cathode is developed to enhance the batteries' adaptability. Organic hydrogels are not suitable for temperature-adaptive polyelectrolytes, but high-performance flexible zinc-air batteries can be achieved by leveraging the interaction between water and terminal groups within polyelectrolyte backbones. The flexible zinc-air batteries show state-of-the-art electrochemical performances that greatly offset the influence of extreme temperature changes.
