Low-cost hydrocarbon membrane enables commercial-scale flow batteries for long-duration energy storage

Zhizhang Yuan et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the pilot-scale synthesis and roll-to-roll manufacturing of sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) membranes and their successful integration in kilowatt-scale alkaline-based flow batteries. The membranes exhibit high hydroxide conductivity, chemical stability, and long-term stable operation. The use of these low-cost hydrocarbon membranes also leads to substantial cost savings compared to traditional Nafion membranes, suggesting a potential pathway for future cost-effective flow batteries for grid energy storage.

A high ion-conductive and stable porous membrane for neutral aqueous Zn-based flow batteries

Yuyue Zhao et al.

Summary: A polyetherimide-based porous ion conductive membrane was developed for Zn-based flow batteries to address poor ion conductivity issues. The membrane's performance was enhanced through pore size exclusion mechanism, leading to a high-efficiency, low-cost energy storage system.
