The relationships between environmental conditions and parallel ecosystems on the coastal dunes of the Mexican Caribbean

Laura R. de Almeida et al.

Summary: The study in the Mexican Caribbean coast identified coastal dunes with various heights, showing a close relationship between dune height and adjacent ecosystems such as coral reefs and seagrasses. The interconnectedness of these ecosystems could explain the variability in coastal dune height, with protected areas having lower foredunes compared to more exposed areas.

Ten Commandments for Sustainable, Safe, and W/Healthy Sandy Coasts Facing Global Change

Rodolfo Silva et al.

Summary: Sandy coasts make up one-third of the global coastline and are valuable yet vulnerable areas for humans and other species. Socio-economic development and climate change have resulted in coastal squeeze, threatening coastal life and ecosystems. While coastal management strategies have become more diverse, many still do not meet sustainability criteria.

Seagrass Depth Distribution Mirrors Coastal Development in the Mexican Caribbean - An Automated Analysis of 800 Satellite Images

John D. Hedley et al.

Summary: Thalassia testudinum is a dominant habitat-builder in coastal reef lagoons of the Caribbean, providing vital ecosystem services such as coastal protection and carbon storage. Using remote sensing, researchers mapped the canopy of T. testudinum over 400 km of coastline in eastern Yucatan Peninsula and compared the depth distribution of canopy density to an ecological model. The study found that the estimated total area of seagrass canopy was consistent with previous estimates, but dense canopies contributing to carbon storage only covered a small portion of the total area.
