Electrical Actuation of Coated and Composite Fibers Based on Poly[ethylene-co-(vinyl acetate)]

Muhammad Farhan et al.

Summary: In this study, electrically triggerable poly[ethylene-co-(vinyl acetate)] (PEVA)-based fiber actuators were developed and showed higher conductivity in coated fibers, with a higher switching temperature and reversible length change. These electro-conductive polymeric actuators are suitable for scaling up and exploring their application potential as artificial muscles in future studies.

Origami hand for soft robotics driven by thermally controlled polymeric fiber actuators

Muhammad Farhan et al.

Summary: This study presents a origami hand robot using active fibers that control the reversible movement of fingers. The crosslinked poly[ethylene-co-(vinyl acetate)] (cPEVA) fibers exhibited a recovery/contracting force of 0.2 N and a work capacity of 0.175 kJ kg(-1), enabling finger bending movement by contraction upon heating. The reversible opening of the fingers was attributed to a combination of the elastic recovery force of the origami structure and crystallization-induced elongation of the fibers upon cooling.
