Simulations of liquid metal flows over plasma-facing component edges and application to beryllium melt events in JET

L. Vignitchouk et al.

Summary: Navier-Stokes simulations were conducted to study the flow of liquid beryllium over the straight edge of plasma-facing components. The results showed the existence of three different hydrodynamic regimes, which are characterized by critical values of the Weber number. The simulations were consistent with experimental data from JET, demonstrating the capability of the model to predict the behavior of transient melt events. The study is important for estimating the possibility of similar mechanisms occurring during disruptions on ITER.

The role of defects, deuterium, and surface morphology on the optical response of beryllium

M. Minissale et al.

Summary: The knowledge of optical properties of beryllium is crucial in industries such as nuclear fusion and aerospace applications. This study investigates the optical properties of bulk beryllium and magnetron sputtering beryllium layers in the spectral range of 500-2000 nm. Experimental measurements and various models are used to interpret the reflectivity results and analyze the influence of different physico-chemical parameters. The findings provide insights into the possible evolution of beryllium's optical properties in a plasma environment, making it a useful tool for thermography studies of tokamak walls.

Summary: Based on simulation results, we found that helium bubble bursting accelerates the surface morphology of PFC tungsten, promoting the growth rate of nanotendrils and predicting the onset of fuzz formation. Experimental data is in agreement with our simulations, indicating that the formation of gas-filled holes affects the surface morphological response of PFC tungsten.

Summary: The study evaluated the potential use of beryllium for storing and transferring a unit of specific heat capacity, and expanding the upper range of heat capacity standards. The temperature dependence of beryllium's specific heat capacity was investigated in a specific range, and reproducibility of its thermophysical properties over time and under multiple heating conditions were analyzed. The results are important for providing metrological support in measuring thermophysical quantities.
