Conjunctival ultraviolet autofluorescence area decreases with age and sunglasses use

Gareth Lingham et al.

Summary: This study used a deep learning-based tool to assess the change in conjunctival ultraviolet autofluorescence (CUVAF) area in young adults over an 8-year period and found that wearing sunglasses was associated with a faster reduction in CUVAF area. The results of this study are important for understanding the damage caused by ultraviolet radiation exposure to the eyes.

Myopia progression from wearing first glasses to adult age: the DREAM Study

Jan Roelof Polling et al.

Summary: This study investigated myopia progression in Europeans based on age and degree of myopia, finding that children with their first prescription before the age of 10 showed the strongest progression and higher risk of high myopia in adulthood. Myopia progression diminished with age, stabilizing after 15 years old.

Incidence and Progression of Myopia in Early Adulthood

Samantha Sze-Yee Lee et al.

Summary: This study describes the 8-year incidence of myopia and change in ocular biometry in young adults. It found that myopia progression continues for more than one-third of adults during the third decade of life, albeit at lower rates than during childhood. The study also suggests that time outdoors may have a protective effect against myopia.

Summary: This study in Perth, Western Australia, examined the prevalence and systemic associations of keratoconus in young adults, finding a prevalence of 1.2% with significant differences in visual acuity and other refractive measures, as well as an association with regular cigarette smoking.

Time spent outdoors through childhood and adolescence - assessed by 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration - and risk of myopia at 20 years

Gareth Lingham et al.

Summary: The study found that myopia in young adulthood was closely related to lower 25(OH)D concentrations at age 20, as well as low vitamin D levels at ages 17 and 20. There was no significant association between myopia and 25(OH)D concentrations at younger ages. Individuals with myopia at age 20 showed a declining trajectory of 25(OH)D concentrations compared to non-myopic peers, with greater differences in trajectory among non-Caucasians.

Summary: The study mapped the thickness profiles of the full retinal and outer retinal layers in healthy young adults at the macula and found that increased thickness of the retina at the central macula was associated with better BCVA, although the effect size was small and not clinically significant.

Time spent outdoors in childhood is associated with reduced risk of myopia as an adult

Gareth Lingham et al.

Summary: The study found that spending more time outdoors during childhood can reduce the risk of myopia in young adulthood, and outdoor activities in later adolescence and young adulthood are also associated with a decreased risk of late-onset myopia. Engaging in outdoor activities during both childhood and adolescence is linked to a lower incidence of myopia in young adulthood.

Distribution and Classification of Peripapillary Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer Thickness in Healthy Young Adults

Gareth Lingham et al.

Summary: This study aims to report the distribution of peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness in healthy young adults and investigate factors associated with RNFL thickness. The results show that RNFL thickness varies with axial length, and more reference data are needed to better define the normal limits of RNFL variation.
