Overprotection and overcontrol in childhood: An evaluation on reliability and validity of 33-item expanded Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ-33), Chinese version

Summary: This study focused on the traumatic experiences of overprotection and overcontrol in children in Chinese culture, and validated a Chinese version of the 33-item Childhood Trauma Questionnaire. The results confirmed significant associations between overprotection/overcontrol experiences, other childhood trauma subtypes, and psychopathological conditions such as depression.

Depression in Chinese adolescents from 1989 to 2018: An increasing trend and its relationship with social environments

Summary: With the dramatic changes in Chinese society, various psychological indicators of Chinese adolescents, such as anxiety, have also undergone changes. A cross-temporal meta-analysis, based on 102 studies conducted from 1989 to 2018, revealed that Chinese adolescents' scores on the Self-rating Depression Scale increased significantly. Female students did not show a significant increase in depression, whereas male students did. The study also found significant correlations between adolescents' depression and negative social indicators, such as unemployment rate and crime rate.

Changes of psychotic-like experiences and their association with anxiety/depression among young adolescents before COVID-19 and after the lockdown in China

Summary: The study identified a significant increase in adolescent PLEs after lockdown, with a positive correlation between changes in PLEs and changes in anxiety/depression. Four PLEs trajectories were identified based on reports at two timepoints, and the group with new-onset PLEs experienced the most severe exacerbation in anxiety/depression symptoms.

Traditional school bullying and cyberbullying: Prevalence, the effect on mental health problems and self-harm behavior

Summary: The study aimed to estimate the prevalence of traditional school bullying and cyberbullying among middle and high school students, and analyze the reciprocal associations between bullying involvement and mental health problems. The findings showed that bullying involvement, whether as a victim, perpetrator, or both, was closely associated with anxiety, depression, psychosocial difficulties, and self-harm behavior. Girls were more likely to be affected by mental health issues, and a significant association between bullying victimization and negative mental health outcomes was observed.

Depression, anxiety and associated factors among Chinese adolescents during the COVID-19 outbreak: a comparison of two cross-sectional studies

Summary: This study found that during the COVID-19 epidemic, the prevalence of depression and anxiety among Chinese adolescents significantly increased. Female gender, senior secondary school enrollment, and concerns about entering a higher grade were positively associated with depression and anxiety. Conversely, adequate sleep duration, regular exercise, good study efficiency, and living in provinces with fewer confirmed COVID-19 cases were negatively associated with depression and anxiety among adolescents.

Depressive symptoms, mental wellbeing, and substance use among adolescents before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in Iceland: a longitudinal, population-based study

Summary: The study found that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant negative impact on adolescent mental health, with an increase in depressive symptoms and worsened mental wellbeing. However, substance use, including cigarette smoking, e-cigarette use, and alcohol intoxication, declined among 15-18-year-olds during the pandemic. This decrease in substance use may serve as a protective factor against future substance use disorders and dependence.
