Officer and Organizational Correlates With Police Interventions in Domestic Violence in China

Summary: This study examines Chinese police officers' attitudes and behaviors towards domestic violence and analyzes the correlation between officer and organizational factors and police intervention. The findings indicate that some Chinese police officers exhibit inaction and prefer non-punitive approaches to resolving family violence. Officers with low levels of knowledge, higher tolerance of violence, and less supportive attitudes towards police involvement are less likely to take action. Conversely, officers who perceive stronger supervisory support and have better knowledge of domestic violence laws are more likely to intervene. These findings highlight the importance of frontline supervisors' attitudes and the need for training programs to enhance officers' legal knowledge and conflict resolution skills.

Chinese Police Cadets' Attitudes Toward Domestic Violence: A Pretest/Posttest Design

Summary: This study analyzes data from police cadets in Zhejiang Police College in Hangzhou, China to examine the effectiveness of a 30-minute lecture on attitudes toward domestic violence (DV). The findings suggest that the training can change cadets' attitudes toward DV, but those with prior knowledge of DV may resist the training. Therefore, it is recommended to incorporate a DV course at police colleges.

Traumatic Experiences and PTSD Symptoms in the Chinese Male Intrafamilial Physical Violence Perpetrators: A Comparative and Structural Equation Modeling Study

Summary: This study aimed to compare traumatic experiences among perpetrators with or without violent pedigree and establish a structural model of PTSD symptoms as mediators of traumatic experiences and severe intrafamilial physical violence among Chinese male perpetrators. The findings suggest that PTSD symptoms cluster as a mediator of the intergenerational transmission of severe physical violence perpetration in Chinese abusive men. Childhood witness IPV has an effect on the adulthood perpetration of IPV.

Police Officers' Preferences for Gender-Based Responding to Domestic Violence in China

Summary: Chinese police officers generally believe that female officers are more suitable for working with battered women, male officers for handling offenders, and a combination of male and female officers for dealing with domestic violence overall. Female officers tend to prefer male officers over themselves in investigating domestic violence overall. Officers who support gender equality or have more tolerance for domestic violence are more likely to believe that female officers are more suitable for working with battered women, and a combination of male and female officers is better for providing service to battered women and responding to domestic violence overall.

Tolerance for domestic violence: do legislation and organizational support affect police view on family violence?

Summary: This study examined the relationship between Chinese police officers' attitudes towards domestic violence and factors such as the DV Law, organizational support, and regional differences. The findings highlighted the impact of factors such as familiarity with the DV Law and supervisory support on reducing police officers' tolerance for domestic violence, while agency training showed potential to enhance tolerance levels. Regional differences in attitudes towards domestic violence were also observed, with implications discussed for policy-making.

Intimate Partner Violence and Depression in Women in China

Summary: This study in China found high prevalence rates of psychological, physical, and sexual violence among women, with many experiencing two or three types of violence. Risk factors for all types of intimate partner violence included low occupational status, having children, living in western provinces, lower income than partner, and economic pressure. Depression rates were also high among victims of violence, with odds ratios for depression significantly elevated across all violence types. Awareness-raising and prevention efforts are needed to address this public health issue, and the recently enacted Domestic Violence Law is a positive step in the right direction.
