Variable Stars in the Giant Satellite Galaxy Antlia 2

A. Katherina Vivas et al.

Summary: We report the discovery of 350 pulsating variable stars in four DECam fields covering the Antlia 2 satellite galaxy, including 318 RR Lyrae stars and eight anomalous Cepheids. Reclassification of some previously designated RR Lyrae objects as anomalous Cepheids supports the updated proper motion and pericenter measurements, indicating a lack of tidal disruption in the dwarf galaxy. The presence of bright foreground RR Lyrae stars and distant background variables suggests that Antlia 2 is a large galaxy extending beyond the observed area.

RR Lyrae Stars in the Newly Discovered Ultra-faint Dwarf Galaxy Centaurus I*

C. E. Martinez-Vazquez et al.

Summary: The paper reports the detection of RRL stars and Delta Scuti/SX Phoenicis stars in the ultra-faint dwarf galaxy Centaurus I, and establishes the distance to Cen I. The study also suggests that the ratio of RRcd stars in UFD galaxies is similar to that in classical dwarf galaxies.

On the Use of Field RR Lyrae As Galactic Probes: IV. New Insights Into and Around the Oosterhoff Dichotomy*

Summary: The study of field RR Lyrae variables reveals a bimodal metallicity distribution, with RRab variables being more metal-rich than RRc variables. In the Bailey diagram, 80% of RRab variables are located along the short-period sequence, while 70% of RRc variables are along the long-period sequence. As metallicity increases, the pulsation period and visual amplitude of RR Lyrae variables steadily decrease.

Summary: This study presents the discovery of variable stars in two isolated dwarf galaxies, VV 124 and KKr 25, with VV 124 hosting a wide range of classical pulsators and KKr 25 lacking a strong young population. The galaxies may have intrinsic differences in metallicity and overall are fairly metal-poor. Detailed simulations have been conducted to estimate the completeness of the variable catalog.

A theoretical scenario for Galactic RR Lyrae in the Gaia data base: constraints on the parallax offset

M. Marconi et al.

Summary: Theoretical light curves in Gaia bands G, G(BP), and G(RP) for RR Lyrae pulsators are derived based on extended non-linear convective models. The effects of chemical composition on the derived parameters and Period-Wesenheit relations are discussed, and theoretical estimates of individual parallaxes for Galactic RR Lyrae in Gaia Data Release 2 are compared with astrometric solutions. A very small offset, consistent with zero, is required to reconcile the predicted distances with Gaia results.

Metallicity of Galactic RR Lyrae from Optical and Infrared Light Curves. I. Period-Fourier-Metallicity Relations for Fundamental-mode RR Lyrae

Joseph P. Mullen et al.

Summary: The study introduces newly calibrated period-phi (31)-[Fe/H] relations for fundamental-mode RR Lyrae stars in both optical and mid-infrared bands, using a large and comprehensive calibration dataset. The results show that the relations minimize systematic trends and demonstrate consistency with high-resolution spectroscopy and globular clusters. Additionally, there is an intrinsic scatter in photometric metallicities, which decreases when using both optical and infrared bands together. The derived relations have broad potential applications for large-area photometric surveys using telescopes like James Webb Space Telescope and LSST.

Summary: The study provides a large and homogeneous sample of alpha-element and iron abundances for field RR Lyrae stars, revealing differences in alpha-element content between metal-rich and metal-poor regions and detecting alpha-element depletion at solar iron abundances for the first time. Additionally, similarities were found with red giants in dwarf galaxies, indicating the important role of old stellar tracers in understanding the early chemical enrichment of the galaxy.

Summary: The authors studied variable stars in the Milky Way ultra-faint dwarf satellites Pisces II and Pegasus III using time-series photometry data collected with the Large Binocular Telescope. They identified RRab stars, SX Phoenicis stars, and stars with uncertain classifications in both galaxies. The study suggests that these galaxies may contain a dominant old stellar population with metallicity variations, as supported by color-magnitude diagrams and spectroscopic analysis.

Cepheid metallicity in the Leavitt law (C-metall) survey - I. HARPS-N@TNG spectroscopy of 47 classical Cepheids and 1 BL Her variables

V Ripepi et al.

Summary: Classical Cepheids are crucial for the extragalactic distance scale, with their period-luminosity and period-Wesenheit relations showing dependency on metallicity. This metallicity dependence significantly affects the intercept of the PLZ/PWZ relations, indicating a larger impact than previously thought. However, it remains inconclusive whether the slope of these relationships also depends on metallicity. The correction of Gaia parallaxes' zero-point offset reduces the size of metallicity dependence on the PLZ/PWZ relations.

Variable stars in Local Group galaxies - V. The fast and early evolution of the low-mass Eridanus II dSph galaxy

C. E. Martinez-Vazquez et al.

Summary: This study presents a detailed analysis of the variable star population in Eridanus II (Ed II), leading to the discovery of 67 RR Lyrae (RRL) stars and 2 Anomalous Cepheids. The research accurately measures the distance modulus of Eri II and determines the metallicity spread, with a focus on the central concentration of more metal-rich RRL and RRab stars. These findings suggest a low overall metallicity in Eri II, consistent with previous spectroscopic studies, and offer insights into the unique star formation burst in this faint dwarf galaxy.

Period-age-metallicity and period-age-colour-metallicity relations for classical Cepheids: an application to the Gaia EDR3 sample

Giulia De Somma et al.

Summary: The study investigated pulsation models and evolutionary predictions for classical Cepheids, deriving period-age and period-age-colour relations that consider metallicity effects. It was found that variations in metal abundance affect the slope and zero-point of these relations, impacting their use as age indicators. Analysis of Gaia data revealed that a brighter mass-luminosity relation leads to older ages, with first overtone pulsators found to be older, and the inclusion of a metallicity term slightly modifies predicted ages.

The Influence of Metallicity on the Leavitt Law from Geometrical Distances of Milky Way and Magellanic Cloud Cepheids

Louise Breuval et al.

Summary: The Cepheid period-luminosity relation is crucial for measuring astronomical distances and establishing the extragalactic distance scale, with a strong dependence on Cepheid distance measurements for determining the local Hubble constant. Recent data releases and parallax measurements have improved the accuracy of the PL relation's slope and intercept, but the relationship's dependence on metallicity remains debated. Combining samples from the Milky Way, the Large Magellanic Cloud, and the Small Magellanic Cloud, researchers in this paper derive the metallicity term of the PL relation, providing insights into the relationship between metallicity and the intrinsic brightness of Cepheids.

RR Lyrae Stars as Seen by the Kepler Space Telescope

Emese Plachy et al.

Summary: The Kepler space telescope's unprecedented precision and sampling revealed new phenomena in RR Lyrae stars, such as period doubling and low-amplitude modes, guiding research towards nonlinear and nonradial studies. The search for theoretical explanations for these phenomena, including their connection to the Blazhko effect, remains a central question in RR Lyrae research. Challenges in Kepler photometry continue to inspire ground-based and space-based research on these variables in the post-Kepler era.
