Comparing influence of inert biochar and silica rich biochar on cement mortar - Hydration kinetics and durability under chloride and sulfate environment

Souradeep Gupta et al.

Summary: The study found that the application of biochar in cementitious materials can increase hydration rate, reduce water permeability, enhance resistance to chloride ions and sulfate attack, as well as decrease mass gain and expansion. The pore-blocking action of biochar helps mitigate microstructural damage caused by sulfate attack, leading to higher dimensional stability of the material.

Gasification Char and Used Foundry Sand as Alternative Fillers to Graphene Nanoplatelets for Electrically Conductive Mortars with and without Virgin/Recycled Carbon Fibres

Alessandra Mobili et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of waste carbon-based fillers compared to commercial graphene nanoplatelets on self-sensing cement mortars were investigated, with gasification char showing the best performance in decreasing electrical resistivity and water absorption. Additionally, a combination of fillers and fibers had a synergistic effect in decreasing the electrical resistivity of mortars, especially when recycled carbon fibers were used.
