Effect of change of sand properties on travel distance of ricocheted debris

Yoon Keon Kim et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the relationship between the travel distance of ricocheted debris and changes in the properties of a sand medium by conducting direct shear tests and using finite element analysis. The results showed that a decrease in the internal friction angle led to deeper penetration of the debris into the sand, while an increase in the loss of kinetic energy caused a decrease in the velocity and travel distance of the debris after ricochet. Changes in the ricochet velocity and travel distance of the debris, according to changes in the internal friction angle, indicated that the debris was influenced by the environment.

Modeling unconfined compressive strength of fine-grained soils: Application of pocket penetrometer for predicting soil strength

Fatemeh Mousavi et al.

Summary: The study aimed to predict soil strength using a regression relationship between unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and pocket penetrometer (PPT) data. Results showed that soil moisture content is more important than soil type in explaining the variance of UCS. PPT data can accurately predict soil UCS with high accuracy and low cost.

Influence of particle size distribution width on GFA index of uniaxially compressed granular materials

Ragunanth Venkatesh et al.

Summary: The study shows that the particle size distribution width has an impact on the internal friction, internal pressure ratio, and flowability of granular materials. As the PSD width increases, the load independent GFA index increases, internal friction decreases, and the internal pressure ratio remains constant. The study confirms that using the O-GFA analyzer is an alternative method to traditional approaches for characterizing the flowability of uniaxially compressed granular materials.
