Characteristics of the Maxillofacial Morphology in Patients with Idiopathic Mandibular Condylar Resorption

Kotaro Tanimoto et al.

Summary: Patients with Idiopathic mandibular condylar resorption (ICR) exhibit severe skeletal class II malocclusions, mainly due to retrusion of the mandible, as well as a tendency for skeletal open bite caused by significantly larger clockwise rotation of the mandible. There were no significant differences between the ICR group and the control group in terms of the inclination or protrusion of the upper and lower central incisors and first molars.ICR patients have been suggested to exhibit skeletal open bite and maxillary protrusion with changes in maxillofacial morphology due to abnormal resorption of the mandibular condyle.

Prevalence of temporomandibular joint disorders: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Ligia Figueiredo Valesan et al.

Summary: The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the prevalence of temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJD) among the general population. The overall prevalence of TMJD was approximately 31% for adults/elderly and 11% for children/adolescents, with the most prevalent TMJD being disc displacement with reduction (DDwR). Knowledge about the frequency of TMJD can encourage dentists to consider appropriate strategies for early and correct diagnosis and management.

TMJ pain as a presentation of metastatic breast cancer to the right mandibular condyle

Victor Ken On Chang et al.

Summary: This case report highlights the rarity of breast cancer metastasis to the mandibular condyle and emphasizes the importance for medical and dental practitioners to consider this possibility, particularly in patients with a history of hormonal positive subtype of breast cancer. Regular surveillance, including examination of the head and neck region, is crucial given the potential for bony metastasis even years after initial diagnosis.

Chondrosarcoma of the Temporomandibular Joint: Systematic Review and Survival Analysis of Cases Reported to Date

Tatiane Fonseca Faro et al.

Summary: TMJ chondrosarcomas are more prevalent in women with a male:female ratio of 1:1.4. Compared to other chondrosarcomas, TMJ chondrosarcomas have low recurrence and higher survival rates. The synovial subtype, absence of reconstructive surgery, and presence of local recurrence or distant metastasis are associated with poorer prognosis for patients.
