The utility of shear wave elastography and serum biomarkers for diagnosing biliary atresia and predicting clinical outcomes

Yakun Liu et al.

Summary: Liver stiffness measurement by SWE and serum GGT level showed the best discriminative utility in differentiating BA from non-BA patients within 45 days. The change in serum direct bilirubin (DB) level was associated with the need for liver transplantation in later life.

Diagnostic performance and prognostic value of elastography in patients with biliary atresia and after hepatic portoenterostomy: protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis

Hualin Yan et al.

Summary: This study aims to systematically review and meta-analyze the value of elastography in the diagnosis of biliary atresia and the prognostic value of postoperative elastography. The comprehensive evidence obtained from this study will contribute to better understanding of the role of elastography in managing BA patients.

Ultrasound shear wave elastography: does it add value to gray-scale ultrasound imaging in differentiating biliary atresia from other causes of neonatal jaundice?

Jesse K. Sandberg et al.

Summary: This study found that shear wave elastography (SWE) combined with gray-scale imaging can improve the diagnostic performance of ultrasound in discriminating biliary atresia from other causes of neonatal jaundice. Gray-scale ultrasound and SWE combined were more predictive in diagnosing biliary atresia compared to using SWE alone. SWE was especially useful in differentiating biliary atresia from non-biliary atresia cases when gray-scale findings were inconclusive.

ULTRASOUND-BASED QUANTIFICATION OF FIBROSIS AND STEATOSIS WITH A NEW SOFTWARE CONSIDERING TRANSIENT ELASTOGRAPHY AS REFERENCE IN PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC LIVER DISEASES

Alexandru Popa et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of two new ultrasound-based techniques for assessing liver steatosis and fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatopathies, showing excellent correlation with traditional methods. Specifically, 2-D-SWE PLUS had optimal cutoff values for predicting liver fibrosis, while SSp PLUS had a strong correlation for predicting steatosis.

Two-Dimensional Shear Wave Elastography Predicts Liver Fibrosis in Jaundiced Infants with Suspected Biliary Atresia: A Prospective Study

Huadon Chen et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that 2D shear wave elastography is an effective non-invasive tool for predicting the stage of liver fibrosis in patients with suspected biliary atresia, with superior diagnostic performance compared to serum fibrosis biomarkers. The sensitivity and negative predictive value of 2D SWE in diagnosing severe fibrosis were high. Furthermore, 2D SWE values were shown to be the most significant parameter for predicting liver fibrosis.

Diagnostic Performance of Transient Elastography in Biliary Atresia Among Infants With Cholestasis

Yin-Ann Boo et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the diagnostic performance of transient elastography (TE) with liver stiffness measurement (LSM) greater than 7.7 kPa for biliary atresia (BA) in different age groups, showing high diagnostic power across all age groups. LSM was positively correlated with the percentage of collagen fibers in liver specimens stained by picrosirius red.
