Structural deformation and its pore-fracture system response of the Wufeng-Longmaxi shale in the Northeast Chongqing area, using FE-SEM, gas adsorption, and SAXS

Jie Xiang et al.

Summary: Tectonism in the periphery of the Sichuan Basin has significantly deformed the Wufeng-Longmaxi Formation, affecting the pore-fracture system and shale gas migration. Deformed shale samples from the anticline and detachment structure, as well as undeformed shale samples, were analyzed to understand the structural deformation and pore-fracture system. The results show that deformed samples have a different structural deformation and pore-fracture characteristics compared to undeformed samples, with more developed micro-fractures and reduced number of organic matter pores. Furthermore, the structural deformation of shale has led to changes in pore volume, surface area, and methane adsorption capacity. These findings are important for understanding the enrichment and preservation of shale gas.

Pore evolution in siliceous shales and its influence on shale gas-bearing capacity in eastern Sichuan-western Hubei, China

Taotao Cao et al.

Summary: The Upper Permian siliceous shale reservoir has been studied as a target for shale gas exploration in the Sichuan Basin. Through comprehensive characterization, it was found that pore development in these shales is controlled by thermal maturity levels and varies with the content of organic matter and brittle minerals. A general pore evolution model was established to illustrate the development process and formation mechanism of shale pores, indicating the potential for shale gas exploration in over-mature shale gas reservoirs in south China.

Modeling of multiphase flow in marine gas hydrate production system and its application to control the production pressure difference

Zheng Liu et al.

Summary: By establishing a transient gas-liquid two-phase flow model and proposing a method for real-time optimization of pump displacement, automatic control of production pressure differential in marine gas hydrate production can be achieved, improving efficiency. The depressurization process can be divided into four stages, and smaller pipe diameters are beneficial for gas-liquid separation efficiency and continuous drainage.

The optimum pressure drawdown for production from a shale gas reservoir: A numerical study with a coupled geomechanics and reservoir model

Zhuang Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigates the factors impacting the optimum drawdown in stress-sensitive shale reservoirs and highlights that the optimum pressure drawdown mainly depends on the stress sensitivity factor rather than the initial reservoir matrix permeability. It provides a simple guideline for pressure drawdown management, suggesting that the pressure drawdown should not exceed the optimum pressure drawdown in field operations.

Permeability and thermal conductivity models of shale matrix with a bundle of tortuous fractal tree-like branching micropore networks

Bowen Hu et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the permeability and thermal conductivity of shale matrix with a bundle of tortuous fractal tree-like micropore networks. New models are developed to accurately predict gas transport and heat transfer in such complex pore structures, with the permeability model showing higher accuracy compared to traditional models. Various parameters such as tortuosity fractal dimension, radius fractal dimension, length ratio, and radius ratio have significant impacts on permeability and thermal conductivity, while branching angle is found to have an insignificant effect on these properties.

Optimization on fracturing fluid flowback model after hydraulic fracturing in oil well

Zhanqing Qu et al.

Summary: This study integrated a comprehensive flowback model of fracturing fluid by combining a modified proppant sedimentation velocity calculation model, a critical proppant regurgitation velocity calculation model, and a wellhead pressure calculation model. By establishing an optimization model of fracturing fluid flowback with specific criteria, the study was able to improve efficiency and reduce proppant settlement in fractured wells. The model was verified with data from fractured wells in DaQing Oilfield, showing promising results with average errors of 11.9% for wellhead pressure and 11.6% for flowback flowrate. Additionally, parametric analysis revealed the effects of factors such as reservoir permeability, reservoir porosity, fracturing fluid density, and proppant particle size on flowback efficiency and proppant settlement degree.

Summary: It is of great significance to predict the production rate and estimate the ultimate recovery for the optimization of shale gas development. A novel approach using XFEM is proposed to simulate the processes of hydraulic fracturing and gas production, revealing that proppant size has a dominant influence on gas production, followed by proppant concentration, shale formation viscosity, proppant Young's modulus, and shale formation Young's modulus.

High-pressure methane adsorption behavior on deep shales: Experiments and modeling

Weijun Shen et al.

Summary: The study found that methane adsorption on deep shales is influenced by various factors, including total organic carbon content, temperature, clay minerals, and moisture content. The TOC content is positively correlated with methane adsorption capacity, while the clay mineral content is negatively correlated. Increasing temperature decreases methane adsorption capacity, but the trend may reverse at certain pressures. The presence of moisture significantly reduces methane adsorption on deep shales, with the reduction in adsorption capacity decreasing as pressure increases.
