Enhanced Self-Assembled Monolayer Surface Coverage by ALD NiO in p-i-n Perovskite Solar Cells

Nga Phung et al.

Summary: Metal halide perovskites have excellent electronic properties, and recent advancements in device performance and stability of perovskite solar cells have been achieved with the application of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). By introducing an intermediate layer of NiO between ITO and SAM, the coverage and homogeneity of SAMs on the substrate can be improved, leading to enhanced device performance. The combination of NiO and SAM results in a more than 20% efficient champion device with a narrower distribution of performance.

Unusual Hole Transfer Dynamics of the NiO Layer in Methylammonium Lead Tri-iodide Absorber Solar Cells

Hyunwoo Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, nickel oxides (NiO) were deposited as hole transport layers (HTLs) in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with controlled thickness by atomic layer deposition (ALD). Ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS) showed ground state bleaching (GSB) recovery, indicating backward hole injection between perovskites and NiO HTLs due to their similar valence band (VB) energy positions. The thickness increase of NiO HTLs induced a red-shift in the photoinduced hole absorption spectrum and a decrease in photoluminescence intensity in near-infrared (NIR) femtosecond TAS.
