From Sequencing to Genome Editing for Cotton Improvement

Renhai Peng et al.

Summary: Traditional breeding techniques are reliable, but genome sequencing offers new data and potential gene targets for improving cotton sustainability. CRISPR/Cas9 technology serves as a powerful tool for precision cotton breeding, yet genome sequencing and editing also come with their own set of challenges.

Overexpression of an Agave Phosphoenolpyruvate Carboxylase Improves Plant Growth and Stress Tolerance

Degao Liu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that ectopically expressing the AaPEPC1 gene in tobacco can significantly enhance photosynthetic rate and biomass production, and lead to significant changes in carbon metabolism, malate accumulation, carbon isotope ratio, and the expression of CAM-related genes. Additionally, overexpression of the AaPEPC1 gene promotes proline biosynthesis and improves plant tolerance to salt and drought stress.

Small RNA and degradome deep sequencing reveals important roles of microRNAs in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) response to root-knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita infection

Caiping Cai et al.

Summary: The research identified 50 differentially expressed miRNAs in cotton roots infected by root knot nematodes, with their targeted genes involved in regulating cotton immune responses. These findings will facilitate the development of new cotton cultivars for nematode resistance.

Genome-Wide Identification and Analysis of the Phosphoenolpyruvate Carboxylase Gene Family in Suaeda aralocaspica, an Annual Halophyte With Single-Cellular C4 Anatomy

Jing Cao et al.

Summary: In Suaeda aralocaspica, different isoforms of PEPC genes were identified, including a bacterial-type PEPC with unknown function and two plant-type PEPCs with distinct subcellular localizations and responses to abiotic stresses. SaPEPC-1 showed higher expression specifically in chlorenchyma cell tissues, potentially participating in the C-4 photosynthetic pathway, while SaPEPC-2 appeared to function more as a non-photosynthetic PEPC. The biochemical properties of the two SaPTPCs differed, with SaPEPC-2 exhibiting higher catalytic efficiency, substrate affinity, and enzyme activity in vitro compared to SaPEPC-1.
