Genetic diversity, GWAS and prediction for drought and terminal heat stress tolerance in bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Salah Fatouh Abou-Elwafa et al.

Summary: This study assessed genetic variation in wheat lines under well-irrigated and drought-stressed conditions, identifying QTLs with different responses to drought. The study revealed that the Stress Tolerance Index (STI) is the best predictor for high yielding genotypes, and the Wheat Association Mapping Initiative (WAMI) population is a valuable resource for improving drought tolerance in wheat.

Root characteristics of an elite spring wheat panel under contrasting water treatments and their genome-wide association study

Sayyed Mohammad Mehdi Khodaee et al.

Summary: In this study, 170 elite spring wheat lines were analyzed for root and shoot characteristics under water-stress and non-stress environments using GWAS. The results showed significant decrease in root and shoot phenotypes under water-stress conditions, with distinct aspects of the population revealed through PCA. GWAS identified multiple significant marker-trait associations, including new loci affecting root development in wheat.

Genetics and genomics of root system variation in adaptation to drought stress in cereal crops

Md Nurealam Siddiqui et al.

Summary: Root systems play a crucial role in plant adaptation to stress conditions, especially drought, and studying their variations and trait selection can enhance cereal crop yield and sustainability. Utilizing cross-species relationships and genomic analysis to explore genetic diversity for genome editing, as well as implementing innovative breeding strategies, are key to developing resilient crop varieties.

Summary: Larger genetic gains in yield are needed to meet future demand, and improving root systems could enhance climate resilience. Understanding the genetic control of root initiation, growth, and development is crucial for breeders to navigate, but also offers opportunities for improvement. Focusing on root system architecture in wheat can help enhance crop improvement and food security.
