Root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.) a threat to agriculture in Mexico: biology, current control strategies, and perspectives

Iran Tapia-Vazquez et al.

Summary: Root-knot nematodes are highly damaging pests in agriculture, causing growth stunting and reduced crop yields. Chemical control methods are commonly used in Mexico, but due to environmental and health concerns, there is a need for biological control strategies. These strategies involve the use of antagonistic organisms to directly control nematodes through predation and parasitism, or indirectly through the production of inhibitory metabolites. However, the development of effective biological control products requires a deep understanding of nematode and microbe biology, as well as regulatory approval.

Phytochemical Profile, Antioxidant Activity, and Cytotoxicity Assessment of Tagetes erecta L. Flowers

Ana Flavia Burlec et al.

Summary: Tagetes erecta L. is a popular ornamental plant widely cultivated for decorative purposes and lutein extraction. The plant contains various secondary metabolites, such as polyphenols, which may have important biological activities. Phytochemical analysis of methanolic extract from T. erecta inflorescences revealed the presence of polyphenolic compounds, including flavonols and hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives. A fraction containing quercetagitrin showed promising antioxidant and cytotoxic activities in vitro. Further purification and structural analysis of compounds from T. erecta extracts are warranted based on these results.

Ex situ conservation in botanical gardens - challenges and scientific potential preserving plant biodiversity

Zsofia Kovacs et al.

Summary: In the Anthropocene, plant diversity is threatened with extinction and genetic diversity of natural populations is eroding. Despite various biodiversity conservation practices available, it is difficult to choose the best option to prevent biodiversity loss. Ex situ conservation has seen significant development, but studies on the sustainability, quality, and usability of plant material prior to establishing garden collections are lacking.
