Alzheimer's disease therapy based on acetylcholinesterase inhibitor/blocker effects on voltage-gated potassium channels

Xian-Tao Li

Summary: Alzheimer's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by memory loss and cognitive decline. Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, currently used for AD treatment, have limited effectiveness. Studies have shown that these inhibitors can inhibit Kv channels, leading to neuroprotective effects and potential for novel AD drugs.

Summary: Clinical trial data for drugs targeting Aβ in Alzheimer's disease suggest that reducing amyloid plaque to a low level may reveal significant clinical benefit, but there may be a time lag between plaque removal and observable clinical benefit. The speed of amyloid removal from the brain by a potential therapy will be crucial in demonstrating clinical benefit in a clinical trial setting.

Gastroprotective effect of low dose Eugenol in experimental rats against ethanol induced toxicity: Involvement of antiinflammatory and antioxidant mechanism

Yahya Hasan Hobani et al.

Summary: Our findings indicated that eugenol has a significant gastroprotective effect at low doses, which can be attributed to its ability to regulate inflammatory reactions and antioxidant capacity. The protective effect of eugenol was enhanced by restoring the lowered GSH and NP-SH levels. Eugenol pre-treatment reduced plasma NO levels and increased PGE2, while decreasing TNF-alpha and IL-6 concentrations. The expression of HSP70 was upregulated and iNOS was downregulated in eugenol-treated rat stomach tissue.
