Uptake and accumulation of heavy metals by water body and Azolla filiculoides in the Anzali wetland

Mahsa Hassanzadeh et al.

Summary: The Anzali international wetland, home to diverse aquatic flora and fauna, faces threats from heavy metal pollutants. Research found that zinc concentrations were higher in all parts of the wetland, with the eastern part showing significantly elevated levels. The exotic fern Azolla filiculoides demonstrated a high capacity for absorbing heavy metals, making it a potential species for bioremediation efforts in the wetland.

Validation of Hydrocharis morsus-ranae as a possible bioindicator of trace element pollution in freshwaters using Ceratophyllum demersum as a reference species

Ludmila Polechonska et al.

Summary: The study compared the contents and bioaccumulation capability of 11 trace elements in Ceratophyllum demersum and different organs of Hydrocharis morsus-ranae. The results showed similarities in accumulation patterns and concentration gradients between the two species, with both being accumulators of Ni and Zn, and H. morsus-ranae also of Cu and Pb. Neural networks demonstrated substantial uniformity in responses of the two species to anthropogenic activity and land use, indicating H. morsus-ranae as a reliable bioindicator of trace metal pollution in freshwater.

Long-term trends and speciation of artificial radionuclides in two submerged macrophytes of the Yenisei River: A comparative study of Potamogeton lucens and Fontinalis antipyretica

Tatiana Zotina et al.

Summary: Long-term trends of artificial radionuclides in shining pondweed and water moss were analyzed from 2003 to 2018 to estimate their reliability as biomonitors of radioactive contamination in a river system. The concentrations of artificial radionuclides in the biomass of these two species were correlated with annual discharges of radionuclides to the Yenisei River, with water moss showing higher concentrations of certain isotopes compared to shining pondweed. Both species can be considered as reliable indicators of radioactive contamination of the river on a long-term scale.

Recent Developments in Microbe-Plant-Based Bioremediation for Tackling Heavy Metal-Polluted Soils

Lala Saha et al.

Summary: Soil contamination with heavy metals is a serious issue that poses environmental hazards in developing countries. Various traditional physicochemical techniques are available for cleaning contaminants from the soil, but bioremediation, which includes microorganism-based and plant-based methods, is considered a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly approach. Bioremediation potential of bacteria and fungi, especially in association with plants, has been reviewed, with microbes such as Pseudomonas spp., Bacillus spp., and Aspergillus spp. showing high metal tolerance and promising bioremediation efficiency. Mechanisms of microbe's detoxification of metals, factors affecting bioremediation efficiency, as well as challenges and future prospects are also discussed.
