A case for associational resistance: Apparent support for the stress gradient hypothesis varies with study system

Amy E. Adams et al.

Summary: The stress gradient hypothesis (SGH) suggests that ecological interactions become more positive as environmental stress increases, with associational resistance being a key example. Our meta-analysis found strong support for the SGH in studies involving bacteria, plants, terrestrial ecosystems, negative interspecific interactions, adults, and survival under stress. However, cross-disciplinary communication barriers currently limit further exploration of the SGH, and future research should expand beyond interspecific plant competition and include multifactor stress.

Plant-plant interactions determine taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic diversity in severe ecosystems

Maral Bashirzadeh et al.

Summary: The study found that nurse plants have a positive impact on the taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity of alpine communities, as well as the functional and phylogenetic diversity of dryland communities. Nurse plants have the largest effects on biodiversity in moderate environmental conditions, which suggests their potential to protect biodiversity from the impacts of climate change in the future.

Biocrusts mediate a new mechanism for land degradation under a changing climate

M. L. Phillips et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of climate and land-use change on biocrusts and soil stability in drylands. The results show that biocrusts can recover rapidly under ambient temperatures, but warming combined with precipitation disturbance hampers their recovery. Additionally, warming alone leads to the loss of biocrusts, mosses, lichens, and soil stability. This research reveals a new mechanism contributing to land degradation in drylands caused by warming-induced state shift in biocrust communities.

Facilitation and the invasibility of plant communities

Lohengrin A. Cavieres

Summary: Plant community diversity plays a crucial role in resistance to non-native invasions. However, when diverse communities facilitate non-native species, the resistance to invasion may be compromised. Facilitative interactions among native and non-native species can alter the relationship between diversity and invasibility.

Biodiversity and ecosystem functioning: Have our experiments and indices been underestimating the role of facilitation?

Alexandra J. Wright et al.

Summary: Through experiments and mechanistic approaches, positive relationships between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning are studied. In addition to competition and resource partitioning, various facilitative mechanisms are identified, such as reduction of species-specific pathogens and improvement of soil nutrient cycling.

An unfortunate alliance: Native shrubs increase the abundance, performance, and apparent impacts of Bromus tectorum across a regional aridity gradient

Jacob E. Lucero et al.

Summary: The study found that the invasive plant Bromus tectorum formed strong positive associations with native shrubs, while the broader herbaceous plant community was not positively associated with them. Increasing abundance of B. tectorum corresponded to decreasing native plant abundance, indicating that native shrubs have the potential to facilitate the invasion of this species in non-native ranges.
