Multivariate Neural Connectivity Patterns in Early Infancy Predict Later Autism Symptoms

Abigail Dickinson et al.

Summary: Using a whole-brain multivariate approach, the study found that neural connectivity patterns at 3 months could predict ASD symptoms at 18 months, with lower frontal connectivity and higher right temporoparietal connectivity indicating more severe ASD symptoms.

Neuroimaging Markers of Risk and Pathways to Resilience in Autism Spectrum Disorder

Istvan Molnar-Szakacs et al.

Summary: Autism spectrum disorder is a complex neurodevelopmental condition with largely unknown etiology, making diagnosis and evaluation challenging. Neuroimaging is a promising tool for identifying risk biomarkers early on, while genetic studies provide insights into mechanisms of resilience. More research is needed to understand how risk and resilience interact and longitudinal designs with involvement of the autism community are important for identifying valuable functional domains.

Motor Impairment Increases in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder as a Function of Social Communication, Cognitive and Functional Impairment, Repetitive Behavior Severity, and Comorbid Diagnoses: A SPARK Study Report

Anjana N. Bhat

Summary: The study found a high prevalence of motor impairment risk in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), which increased with severity of social communication, repetitive behavior, cognitive, and functional impairments. Recognizing motor impairments as part of the diagnostic criteria for ASD is crucial, and appropriate screening, assessment, and interventions for motor function in children with ASD are necessary.

Exploring the relation between brain response to speech at 6-months and language outcomes at 24-months in infants at high and low risk for autism spectrum disorder: A preliminary functional near-infrared spectroscopy study

Meredith Pecukonis et al.

Summary: Infants at high familial risk for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) show increased risk for language impairments, with differences in brain response to speech indicating a potential relation to language functioning. Studying HRA+ and HRA- infants separately highlights the importance of understanding distinct neural systems for speech processing in infants at high risk for ASD.

Altered Thalamocortical Connectivity in 6-Week-Old Infants at High Familial Risk for Autism Spectrum Disorder

Summary: Research has shown that there are abnormalities in thalamocortical connectivity in infants at high familial risk for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) at 6 weeks old, which predict atypical social development in the future.

Factors Associated with a Delayed Autism Spectrum Disorder Diagnosis in Children Previously Assessed on Suspicion of Autism

Sara Hojslev Avlund et al.

Summary: Factors such as autism symptoms, diagnostic history of other developmental disorders, cognitive ability, and socioeconomic status are associated with delayed autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis. Those with delayed ASD had ADOS scores falling between early and no ASD. Distinctions between delayed and early ASD included other developmental disorders, time and clinical trends, while delayed and no ASD were distinguished by a higher frequency of IQ < 70 at baseline and a diagnosis of emotional disorders during follow-up.

Summary: This study analyzed the brain growth trajectories of infants with ASD using MRI scans, finding that several regions showed different growth rates associated with ASD. White matter exhibited increased growth rate, while grey matter showed decreased growth rate.
