A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Iowa Oral Performance Instrument Measures in Persons with Parkinson's Disease Compared to Healthy Adults

Laura L. Pitts et al.

Summary: This study analyzed existing literature comparing tongue strength and endurance between individuals with Parkinson's disease and healthy adults. The findings suggest that reduced anterior tongue strength and endurance are common in individuals with Parkinson's disease and may decline further as the disease progresses. Further research is needed to explore the relationship between tongue strength, tongue endurance, and swallowing physiology, as well as the potential applications of tongue pressure training in dysphagia rehabilitation for individuals with Parkinson's disease.
