Connectivity of organic matter pores in the Lower Silurian Longmaxi Formation shale, Sichuan Basin, Southern China: Analyses from helium ion microscope and focused ion beam scanning electron microscope

Kun Zhang et al.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive depiction of the 3D connectivity of organic matter (OM) pores in shale. The results indicate that the connectivity of shale is mainly contributed by the well-distributed and structurally advantageous OM pores, which can significantly improve gas adsorption and percolation in the shale reservoir.

Formation mechanism of the sealing capacity of the roof and floor strata of marine organic-rich shale and shale itself, and its influence on the characteristics of shale gas and organic matter pore development

Kun Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the development of sealing capacities of shale, roof, and floor strata and their impact on the composition of shale gas and the development of organic matter pores. The research reveals that roof and floor strata have vertical sealing effects on organic-rich shale, and the overburden pressure of shale increases with burial depth, leading to decreased permeability and increased self-sealing capacity.

Quantitative Comparison of Genesis and Pore Structure Characteristics of Siliceous Minerals in Marine Shale With Different TOC Contents-A Case Study on the Shale of Lower Silurian Longmaxi Formation in Sichuan Basin, Southern China

Kun Zhang et al.

Summary: China has abundant shale gas resources, and the study on shale gas accumulation is of great significance. This paper analyzes and experiments on marine shale samples to study the genesis and pore structure characteristics of marine shale from a quantitative perspective. The results of this study have theoretical and practical significance for improving the theory of shale gas formation and guiding the selection of shale gas sweet spot.

Revisiting movable fluid space in tight fine-grained reservoirs: A case study from Shahejie shale in the Bohai Bay Basin, NE China

Hexin Huang et al.

Summary: This study examines the properties of movable fluid in tight black shales, finding low porosity and under-saturation of movable fluid in these formations. The research also demonstrates that porosity and fluid saturation in shales are largely determined by the heterogeneity of pore structure.

Controlling Factors and Formation Models of Organic Matter Accumulation for the Upper Permian Dalong Formation Black Shale in the Lower Yangtze Region, South China: Constraints from Geochemical Evidence

Jianghui Ding et al.

Summary: The black shale in the upper Permian Dalong Formation in the Lower Yangtze region is recognized as an excellent source rock, with different organic carbon contents and mechanisms of accumulation in sections A and B. While section A is mainly affected by paleoredox conditions, section B is controlled by biotic productivity, paleoredox conditions, and sedimentary rate. Despite being deposited in an oxidizing water environment, the TOC contents in the shale are not necessarily lower.
