Renal Denervation Prevents Atrial Arrhythmogenic Substrate Development in CKD

Mathias Hohl et al.

Summary: In patients with chronic kidney disease, renal denervation (RDN) has been found to inhibit atrial fibrillation susceptibility, reducing the risk of stroke and death. This study highlights the potential therapeutic use of RDN in reducing atrial fibrillation risk in CKD patients, independent of renal function and blood pressure.

Heart failure in chronic kidney disease: the emerging role of myocardial fibrosis

Gregorio Romero-Gonzalez et al.

Summary: Heart failure is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in chronic kidney disease patients. Myocardial interstitial fibrosis (MIF), resulting from altered collagen turnover, contributes to the development of heart failure. Various mechanisms in different stages of chronic kidney disease may affect fibroblasts and collagen turnover in the heart. Therefore, understanding MIF could lead to the identification of biomarkers and targets for prevention and treatment of heart failure in chronic kidney disease patients.

Summary: FGF23 is a phosphotropic hormone that undergoes post-translational modification by phosphorylation and O-glycosylation, which can lead to either proteolysis or secretion of biologically active intact forms. In the circulation, FGF23 may undergo further processing by other enzymes.

Summary: Patients with chronic kidney disease face an increased risk of cardiovascular events, with advanced CKD stages significantly elevating the risk. Cardiovascular events, rather than end-stage kidney disease, are the leading cause of death in this high-risk population, and CKD causes a proinflammatory state that affects the cardiovascular system.

Joanna Tracz et al.

Summary: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) face a higher risk of atherosclerosis and premature mortality due to cardiovascular events. The well-known risk factors for classical atherosclerosis do not fully explain the high prevalence of atherosclerosis in CKD. The complexity of the molecular mechanisms underlying the acceleration of CKD-related atherosclerosis remains to be fully understood.

Klotho as a biomarker of subclinical atherosclerosis in patients with moderate to severe chronic kidney disease

Javier Donate-Correa et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates an association between decreased levels of Klotho protein and subclinical atherosclerosis in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Both serum and peripheral blood cells (PBCs) expression levels of Klotho were found to be significantly lower in patients with subclinical atherosclerosis, and were independent determinants for arterial stiffness markers. This suggests that maintaining or elevating Klotho levels may have potential therapeutic benefits in reducing cardiovascular disease risk in CKD patients.
