Comparison of the diversity and biomass of beach-cast seaweeds from NE and SE Brazil

Maria Irisvalda Leal Gondim Cavalcanti et al.

Summary: This study compared the diversity, coverage, and biomass of beached seaweeds on the north-eastern and south-eastern coasts of Brazil. The results showed that while the north-eastern coast had higher species richness, the south-eastern coast exhibited higher coverage and biomass. The frequency and distribution of beached seaweeds varied significantly across beaches in Brazil, providing insights into their biodiversity and biomass and their potential economic use in the future.

In Vitro Protein Digestibility of Selected Seaweeds

Goldy De Bhowmick et al.

Summary: Seaweed biomass has potential as an alternative protein source due to its fast growth and beneficial nutrients. This study determined the k-Protein Digestibility-Corrected Amino Acid Score (k-PDCAAS) values of six Irish seaweeds and identified their limiting amino acids. The results showed that the seaweeds contained essential amino acids and taurine, making them suitable as alternative protein sources for human nutrition.

An overview of beach-cast seaweeds: Potential and opportunities for the valorization of underused waste biomass

Talissa Barroco Harb et al.

Summary: There is a growing demand for new sources of natural products, and beach-cast seaweed can be a relevant component to meet this need. The excess of beach-cast seaweed causes environmental problems, but its utilization can reduce financial costs, provide alternative income, and limit the impact on natural seaweed beds.

Marine Macroalgae Waste from Northern Portugal: A Potential Source of Natural Pigments?

S. L. Pardilho et al.

Summary: Marine macroalgae waste was investigated as an alternative source of natural pigments, with promising results. Chlorophyll a was found to be the predominant pigment regardless of dehydration conditions, with freeze-dried biomass showing significantly higher concentrations. Acetone was identified as the best solvent for pigment extraction.

Antioxidant activity and related chemical composition of extracts from Brazilian beach-cast marine algae: opportunities of turning a waste into a resource

Talissa Barroco Harb et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the antioxidant activity and chemical composition of methanolic and aqueous extracts from fifteen beach-cast marine algae from the Brazilian Coast. It found that brown macroalgae exhibited the highest antioxidant activities, followed by red algae, while green beach-cast algae had the lowest activities. The concentrations of phenolic compounds and carbohydrates showed a positive correlation with the antioxidant activities of the tested extracts.
