Ecophysiological and ultrastructural characterisation of the circumpolar orange snow alga Sanguina aurantia compared to the cosmopolitan red snow alga Sanguina nivaloides (Chlorophyta)

Lenka Prochazkova et al.

Summary: Red snow caused by spherical cysts can be found worldwide, while an orange snow phenomenon caused by spherical cells is restricted to (Sub-)Arctic climates. Comparing ecophysiologically, significant differences in fatty acid and pigment profiles were found in the two species occurring in the same localities at Svalbard, which play an important role in adaptation to extreme conditions. The reasons why S. aurantia has not been found outside (Sub-)Arctic climate types remain unknown.

Isolation and optimization of a novel thraustochytrid strain for DHA rich and astaxanthin comprising biomass as aquafeed supplement

Pratik R. Pawar et al.

Summary: A marine organism belonging to the Thraustochytrids family was isolated from mangroves in Mumbai, India, identified as Aurantiochytrium limacinum. Optimal process parameters resulted in the production of high oil content dry cell weight in a short cultivation period. This strain is a promising candidate for aquafeed production due to its ability to simultaneously synthesize DHA and astaxanthin.

Adonis amurensis Is a Promising Alternative to Haematococcus as a Resource for Natural Esterified (3S,3′S)-Astaxanthin Production

Yongfu Li et al.

Summary: Adonis amurensis, a higher plant capable of producing AST, contains AST in the form of di-esterified with the main geometrical isomer being all-trans AST. The flower also features one optical isomer and five geometrical isomers, with all-trans AST being the predominant form. The production cost of AST from Adonis flowers is estimated to be as low as euro388-393/kg, making it a potentially cost-effective source of natural esterified AST.

Importance of Downstream Processing of Natural Astaxanthin for Pharmaceutical Application

Lucio Rodriguez-Sifuentes et al.

Summary: Astaxanthin (ASX) is a xanthophyll pigment with high antioxidant activity, used in pharmaceutical and nutraceutical applications. It can be produced intracellularly by microorganisms, but with high production costs. Chemical synthesis is an alternative, but with higher toxicity. Current focus is on developing technologies to improve production processes, efficiency, and competitiveness.
