Absorption, metabolism, and bioactivity of vitexin: recent advances in understanding the efficacy of an important nutraceutical

Ye Peng et al.

Summary: Vitexin, an apigenin-8-C-glucoside found in many edible and medicinal plants, has various bioactive properties such as antioxidation, anti-inflammation, anti-cancer, neuron-protection, and cardio-protection. Recent studies have also reported beneficial health effects including fat reduction, glucose metabolism, and hepatoprotection. Understanding the absorption, metabolism, bioactivity, and molecular targets of vitexin is important for its utilization as a chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic agent.

Evaluation of polyphenol bioaccessibility and kinetic of starch digestion of spaghetti with persimmon (Dyospyros kaki) flours coproducts during in vitro gastrointestinal digestion

Raquel Lucas-Gonzalez et al.

Summary: Adding persimmon flour can significantly improve the polyphenol profile of spaghetti, with an increase of around 2 to 3 times at 3% and 6% concentrations, respectively. The effects of cooking and digestion processes were found to impact the free polyphenol content more than the bound polyphenols. Additionally, spaghetti enriched with 3% persimmon flour showed a reduction in starch digestion kinetics, while 6% enriched spaghetti increased it.

Phenolics of Yellow Pea (Pisum sativum L.) Hulls, Their Plasma and Urinary Metabolites, Organ Distribution, and In Vivo Antioxidant Activities

Fanghua Guo et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the chemical profiles, metabolites, and organ distribution of yellow pea hull (YPH) extract, as well as their in vivo antioxidant activities in rats using the D-gal model. Results showed that the distribution of these polyphenol metabolites in plasma and organs may have positive effects on antioxidant enzymes.

In Vitro Metabolism of Six C-Glycosidic Flavonoids from Passiflora incarnata L.

Martina Tremmel et al.

Summary: This study investigated the metabolism of C-glycosylated flavones in medical plants using an in vitro intestinal and epithelial metabolism model. The findings suggest that some flavones can be highly metabolized in the intestine, while others undergo poor metabolism. Enzymes expressed by Caco-2 cells are able to potentially cleave C-C bonds in vitro, producing unexpected metabolites.
