Single ion thermal wave packet analyzed via time-of-flight detection

Felix Stopp et al.

Summary: Researchers confined a single Ca-40 ion in a Paul trap, cool it down and determine the previous state of the trapped ion accurately through theoretical modeling, experimental study and ion extraction process design. This method also opens up new possibilities for extracting, manipulating and designing quantum wave packets outside of the Paul trap.
