Human Impacts Overwhelmed Hydroclimate Control of Soil Erosion in China 5,000 Years Ago

Fan Zhang et al.

Summary: Deforestation and intensive land use in China have led to long-term anthropogenic soil erosion. The main driver of soil erosion was hydroclimate during 6-40 ka BP, while population increase and agricultural activities have become the primary factor after ca. 5 ka BP. Early human activities in China have had profound implications on Earth's surface at a continental scale.

Organic carbon remineralization rate in global marine sediments: A review

Zhiyan Chen et al.

Summary: This review discusses the remineralization of organic carbon in marine sediments, with factors influencing remineralization rates such as distance from the continent, global warming, and human activities. The interactions between organic carbon and microbial degradation genes provide insights into the microbial scale of sedimentary organic carbon remineralization. Understanding both the processes and underlying mechanisms of organic carbon remineralization in marine sediments is crucial.

Controls on the abundance, provenance and age of organic carbon buried in continental margin sediments

Blanca Ausin et al.

Summary: Continental margins are important locations for the burial of organic carbon (OC), and hydrodynamic particle sorting processes have a significant influence on the radiocarbon age of OC in sediment fractions from these areas.

A study on the response of carbon cycle system in the Pearl River Estuary to riverine input variations

Yingxin Ye et al.

Summary: Human activities have already impacted carbon cycles in estuaries, particularly due to the construction of wastewater treatment plants altering nutrient and organic carbon levels. Changes in riverine inputs of nutrients, dissolved organic carbon and particulate organic carbon have distinct effects on photosynthesis, bacterial respiration, and sediment biochemical reactions in the Pearl River Estuary, significantly impacting carbon dynamics. Multiple linear regression results show that variations in air-sea CO2 flux in the estuary are modulated by net community production and sediment DIC release flux, emphasizing the importance of terrestrial POC input and deposition in a shallow estuary.

Teleconnection between climate oscillations and riverine nutrient dynamics in Southeast China based on wavelet analysis

Yun Hao et al.

Summary: The study found a connection between climate oscillation and NPS pollution, indicating that the increasing frequency of warm ENSO events would enhance the risk of nutrient export to rivers in Southeast China. Therefore, more attention should be paid to large-scale climate oscillation in the prediction of agricultural nutrient pollution and management of water quality in agricultural watersheds.

Controls on Organic Carbon Burial in the Eastern China Marginal Seas: A Regional Synthesis

B. Zhao et al.

Summary: The study revealed that there is selective decay of younger, more labile OC from both marine and terrestrial sources in the suspended particulate matter of the Changjiang River, while there is less decay of terrestrial OC along the Yellow River sediment dispersal pathway. The burial efficiency of OC in the mud areas of the Bohai Sea is significantly higher than in the Yellow and East China Seas, due to rapid deposition. The burial flux of biospheric OC in the Eastern China Marginal Seas was estimated to be 7.00 +/- 0.79 Mt yr(-1), with river damming significantly reducing OC burial and impacting the coastal ocean carbon budget.

A review of current and emerging approaches for Quaternary marine sediment dating

Wenpeng Li et al.

Summary: This review highlights the importance of dating methodologies for Quaternary marine sediments in paleoceanography, summarizing the common methods of absolute and relative dating. It discusses applications and limitations of each dating methodology in various marine environments, as well as emerging event dating methods such as microplastics, mercury isotopes, and organic pollutant deposition. The review also touches on the future prospects for interdisciplinary methods to better understand natural geological evolution and predict future changes in earth science.
