Effects of warming, eutrophication and climate variability on acidification of the seasonally stratified North Yellow Sea over the past 40 years

Cheng-long Li et al.

Summary: This study reconstructs the long-term acidification evolution of the North Yellow Sea (NYS) and finds that the winter warming rate in the NYS has been twice that of global ocean surface warming over the past 40 years. The amplitudes of seasonal variations in bottom-water saturation state and pH have also increased, indicating increased environmental stress on marine calcifying organisms and the benthic ecosystem in the region.

Mechanism-based deduction of subsurface aragonite saturation state in a semi-enclosed and seasonally stratified coastal sea

Cheng-long Li et al.

Summary: In this study, mechanism-based models were developed to establish relationships between summertime and autumnal subsurface Omega(arag) in the North Yellow Sea and seawater temperature, practical salinity, dissolved oxygen, and atmospheric CO2 concentration. The reconstructed subsurface Omega(arag) values from the models were in good agreement with values calculated from observed hydrochemical data, indicating potential applicability in similar coastal systems. This successful attempt provides insights into the threat posed to marine calcifying organisms in the area and the importance of understanding the impacts of environmental factors on oceanic carbonate chemistry.

Regional differences in seasonal variation of air-sea CO2 exchange in the Yellow Sea

Song-yin Wang et al.

Summary: Studies have shown regional differences in seasonal variations of air-sea CO2 fluxes and sea surface carbonate chemistry in the Yellow Sea, with the Yellow Sea being one of the weakest marine CO2 absorbers among various continental shelves. Integration of biological drawdown, vertical mixing, warming/cooling, and air-sea reequilibration helps explain the seasonal variation of fCO2 in the region.

Seasonal Mixing and Biological Controls of the Carbonate System in a River-Dominated Continental Shelf Subject to Eutrophication and Hypoxia in the Northern Gulf of Mexico

Wei-Jen Huang et al.

Summary: The study found that strong seasonal net DIC removal occurred in the near-surface water during summer on the northern Gulf of Mexico continental shelf, while the net DIC production peak in the near-bottom, subsurface waters was observed between July and September. The delayed coupling between eutrophic surface and hypoxic bottom waters suggests a similar pattern may be seen in other nutrient-rich, river-dominated ocean margins worldwide.
