An integrative re-evaluation of Typhlatya shrimp within the karst aquifer of the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico

Lauren Ballou et al.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive evaluation of the Typhlatya genus in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, revealing conflicts in previous species classifications and the discovery of new genetic lineages. The research emphasizes the importance of using integrative and interdisciplinary approaches when assessing biodiversity in complex and poorly studied aquifers.

Habitat Partitioning in the Marine Sector of Karst Subterranean Estuaries and Bermuda's Marine Caves: Benthic Foraminiferal Evidence

Jacquelyn N. Cresswell et al.

Summary: This study found that benthic habitat partitioning in the oxygenated marine sectors of Karst subterranean estuaries is strongly influenced by the source and quantity of particulate organic matter delivered to the benthos. Analysis of benthic foraminifera data from several large flooded cave systems in Bermuda revealed spatial variability in benthic communities based on the organic matter sources and isotopic values.

Inland Tidal Oscillations Within the Yucatan Peninsula

Aaron Coutino et al.

Summary: The Yucatan Peninsula is made up of highly porous, karstified limestone which retains water mainly within a subsurface aquifer, leading to scarce surface water bodies. This study found tidal oscillations up to 100 km inland, indicating a greater inland penetration of tidal signals due to cave passages and fracture zones in the limestone. The increased connectivity of aquifer to inland water bodies has implications for geosciences, including paleoclimate reconstructions and flood risk assessments as sea levels rise.

Changes in Organic Matter Deposition Can Impact Benthic Marine Meiofauna in Karst Subterranean Estuaries

David Brankovits et al.

Summary: Subsurface mixing of seawater and terrestrial-borne meteoric waters on carbonate landscapes creates karst subterranean estuaries, an area with poorly understood carbon cycling, ecosystem functioning, and impact on submarine groundwater discharge. Caves in karst platforms facilitate water and material exchange between marine and terrestrial environments, documenting long-term environmental change. Decreasing terrestrial organic matter deposition within the karst subterranean estuary over the last 1,000 years and a shift in benthic meiofaunal habitats due to a decrease in terrestrial organic matter suggest that landscape and watershed level changes can impact ecosystem functioning within adjacent subterranean estuaries.
