Antarctic krill fishery effects over penguin populations under adverse climate conditions: Implications for the management of fishing practices

Lucas Kruger et al.

Summary: Fast climate changes in the western Antarctic Peninsula are reducing krill density, which, along with increased fishing activities in recent decades, may have had synergistic effects on penguin populations. The study found that fishing, climate change, and the Southern Annular Mode together elevated the probability of negative population growth rates for chinstrap and gentoo penguins. The current management of krill fishery in the Southern Ocean may not reflect the variability of the krill population under the effects of climate change, leading to negative impacts on penguin populations.

Glider-Based Estimates of Meso-Zooplankton Biomass Density: A Fisheries Case Study on Antarctic Krill (Euphausia superba) Around the Northern Antarctic Peninsula

Christian S. Reiss et al.

Summary: This study compared krill density estimates derived from gliders to those from ship-based surveys, exploring the feasibility of using gliders to supplement or replace vessel-based surveys of fishery resources. The results demonstrated that fisheries surveys using acoustically-equipped gliders are feasible, can provide density estimates to inform management, and may be conducted at lower cost than ship surveys in some cases.

Standing stock of Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba Dana, 1850) (Euphausiacea) in the Southwest Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean, 2018-19

Bjorn A. Krafft et al.

Summary: The large-scale survey conducted in 2018-19 in the Southwest Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean and across the Scotia Sea provided estimates of the distribution and density of Antarctic krill. The survey resulted in the largest ever total transect line coverage in the Southern Ocean, with krill standing stock estimated at 62.6 megatonnes. Regional differences in krill densities compared to previous surveys indicate varying distributions and biomass across different areas.
