Two Anaerobic Ciliates (Ciliophora, Armophorea) from China: Morphology and SSU rDNA Sequence, with Report of a New Species, Metopus paravestitus nov. spec

Song Li et al.

Summary: The morphology and phylogeny of two metopid ciliates from anaerobic habitats in China were studied, revealing a new species and verifying the geographical distribution of Metopus es. The study also confirmed the non-monophyly of the genus Metopus and genus Metopidae.

New contributions to the phylogeny of the ciliate class Heterotrichea (Protista, Ciliophora): analyses at family-genus level and new evolutionary hypotheses

Yong Chi et al.

Summary: This study utilized both morphological and molecular data to infer phylogenetic relationships for the class Heterotrichea, proposing new evolutionary hypotheses. Key findings include discrepancies between molecular and morphological evidence in certain relationships, as well as uncertainty in the systematic positions of several families. Monophyly of each genus in the study was supported by molecular phylogenetic trees, with a few exceptions.

Morphology and molecular phylogeny of the anaerobic freshwater ciliate Urostomides spinosus nov. spec. (Ciliophora, Armophorea, Metopida) from China

Wenbao Zhuang et al.

Summary: The morphology and molecular phylogeny of a new metopid ciliate, Urostomides spinosus nov. spec., discovered in a freshwater ditch in Qingdao, China, were investigated. Diagnostic features of the new species were identified, and molecular data did not support a close relationship between the new species and the morphologically similar Urostomides campanula.

Redescription and SSU rRNA gene- based phylogeny of an anaerobic ciliate, Plagiopyla ovata Kahl, 1931 (Ciliophora, Plagiopylea)

Ran Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the morphology and molecular phylogeny of Plagiopyla ovata, a poorly known anaerobic ciliate, isolated from sand samples collected from the Yellow Sea coast at Qingdao, China. The detailed documentation of oral ciliature provided the first information of its kind, with an improved species diagnosis. The newly sequenced SSU rRNA gene placed P. ovata within the monophyletic family Plagiopylidae, but further evolutionary relationships within the family as well as the genus remain unclear due to undersampling and lack of sequence data from known species.
