Use of artificial illumination to reduce Pacific halibut bycatch in a US West Coast groundfish Bottom trawl

Mark J. M. Lomeli et al.

Summary: This study compared the catch efficiency for Pacific halibut and four commercially important groundfish species between an illuminated and non-illuminated trawl in the U.S. West Coast groundfish bottom trawl fishery. The results showed that the illuminated trawl caught significantly fewer Pacific halibut and sablefish than the non-illuminated trawl.

A Deep Learning Approach to Assist Sustainability of Demersal Trawling Operations

Maria Sokolova et al.

Summary: The study introduces an automated catch description system for commercial demersal trawl fisheries, utilizing advanced neural network technology to classify and count catch items during fishing operations. The system shows promising results in improving efficiency and reducing unwanted bycatch, contributing to the sustainable management of fisheries.

Using mental models to quantify linear and non-linear relationships in complex fishery systems

Robert Murphy et al.

Summary: Research shows that the impact of different fishery management policies on fishers and social-ecological systems depends on the interactions of various factors, and it also confirms that the relationship between regulations and fishing operations is not always linear. Participatory modeling can better integrate different perspectives of managers, scientists, and industry, thus providing a more comprehensive understanding of the direct and indirect impacts on fishery systems.

Behaviour in a bottom trawl: moving forward to limit catches of Atlantic cod

M. Pol et al.

Summary: The iconic Atlantic cod has been the focus of substantial fishing-gear research, but understanding of cod behavior during capture in bottom trawls remains limited. Research should focus on directly observing and measuring cod's reactions and sensory capabilities to improve the selectivity of bottom trawls and reduce catches of cod.
