Mercury distribution around the Siele Hg mine (Mt. Amiata district, Italy) twenty years after reclamation: Spatial and temporal variability in soil, stream sediments, and air

Silvia Fornasaro et al.

Summary: Although the reclamation of the Siele mine reduced the release of mercury, it did not completely stop it. The existing data shows that the risk to the environment and health is low, but natural recovery will take a long time.

Measuring anthropogenic impacts on an industrialised coastal marine area using chemical and textural signatures in sediments: A case study of Augusta Harbour (Sicily, Italy)

E. Romano et al.

Summary: Augusta Bay in Sicily, Italy was a major European (petro)chemical hub from the 1950s to the 1970s, but began to decline due to factory closures and production transfer. Significant pollution was found in sediments around the bay, mainly from the former chlor-alkali plant, with contamination affecting the entire harbor to varying degrees. Recent research showed that the construction of a dam/breakwater in the 1960s trapped terrestrial sediment inside the harbor, providing a time marker in sediment cores. Environmental remediation may be necessary to address the presence of highly contaminated sediments in the harbor.

Background concentrations and extent of Cu, As, Co, and U contamination in Baltic Sea sediments

Sina Shahabi-Ghahfarokhi et al.

Summary: This study established background values of copper, arsenic, cobalt, and uranium in Baltic Sea sediments to help identify anthropogenic loads of these elements. Copper and uranium concentrations exceeded background values in surface sediments, while arsenic showed the highest concentrations in the Baltic Sea. Cobalt concentrations remained within background values, indicating no contamination.
