De Novo and Dominantly Inherited SPTAN1 Mutations Cause Spastic Paraplegia and Cerebellar Ataxia

Liedewei Van de Vondel et al.

Summary: This study identifies the association between SPTAN1 gene and neurological disorders such as ataxia and spastic paraplegia. Through screening a large number of datasets and protein modeling, multiple SPTAN1 variants are identified, and disrupted interlinking of spectrin helices is suggested as a key feature of the pathomechanism.

Angiogenin mediates paternal inflammation-induced metabolic disorders in offspring through sperm tsRNAs

Yanwen Zhang et al.

Summary: Paternal environmental inputs can influence various phenotypes in offspring, including metabolic disorders, with Ang-mediated biogenesis of 5'-tsRNAs in sperm playing a key role in transmitting paternal inflammation-induced effects. This study highlights the importance of understanding the mechanisms by which paternal environmental factors impact offspring health and suggests potential targets for intervention to prevent metabolic disorders.

Ethnicity-specific BMI cutoffs for obesity based on type 2 diabetes risk in England: a population-based cohort study

Rishi Caleyachetty et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify ethnicity-specific BMI cutoffs for obesity to prevent type 2 diabetes among non-White populations. The findings suggest that different ethnic populations have different BMI cutoffs equivalent to the risk of type 2 diabetes at a BMI of 30.0 kg/m(2) in White populations, highlighting the need for appropriate clinical surveillance for minority ethnic populations to optimize prevention and management of type 2 diabetes.
