Astigmatic change as a predictor of intrastromal corneal ring segment late extrusion

Francesco D'Oria et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of intrastromal corneal ring segments (ICRS) that were explanted due to late extrusion on keratoconic corneas. The results showed that after explantation, the corneal topographic findings nearly returned to the baseline level, but there was a significant worsening in refractive cylinder. The main factors before implantation included keratoconus grade, keratometric readings, and visual acuities, while the main factors after ICRS implantation were refractive cylinder, corrected distance visual acuity, and uncorrected distance visual acuity. Corneal aberrations played an important role in the pre-explantation analysis.

Incidence and Reasons for Intrastromal Corneal Ring Segment Explantation

Francesco D'Oria et al.

Summary: The study reviewed consecutive cases of intrastromal corneal ring segments explanted in the last 10 years to determine the main causes and define the incidence rate. Functional failure, particularly refractive failure, was found to be the main reason for explantation followed by anatomic failure, with spontaneous extrusion being a common issue in advanced cases of keratoconus.

Effect of Stem Cell-Derived Extracellular Vesicles on Damaged Human Corneal Endothelial Cells

Summary: The study demonstrated that extracellular vesicles derived from mesenchymal stem cells can promote the regeneration of damaged human corneal endothelial cells, enhancing their proliferation and survival, as well as promoting cell migration.

Mesenchymal Stem Cell-Derived Extracellular Vesicles Protect Human Corneal Endothelial Cells from Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress-Mediated Apoptosis

Lola Buono et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that MSC-derived extracellular vesicles have a significant impact on reducing endoplasmic reticulum stress in corneal endothelial cells, while promoting Akt pathway activation and limiting apoptosis. In contrast, serum-derived extracellular vesicles mainly influenced Akt phosphorylation, with minimal effects on endoplasmic reticulum stress modulation and apoptosis prevention. The effects of MSC-EVs were associated with the transfer of multiple endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-stress targeting miRNAs to corneal endothelial cells.
