Microalgae growth with a high concentration of emerging pollutants and phytotoxicity evaluation of cultivation wastewater

Alan Rempel et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the influence of emerging pollutants on the growth of microalgae and seed germination. The results showed that Scenedesmus obliquus was able to grow in all mixtures of pollutants, while Spirulina platensis experienced cell death in mixtures containing paracetamol. The culture medium of microalgae had toxic effects on seed germination, but by choosing the right microalgae strain, it is possible to use them for bioremediation and reduce the negative effects on seed germination.

Characterization of a newly isolated cyanobacterium Plectonema terebrans for biotransformation of the wastewater-derived nutrients to biofuel and high-value bioproducts

Ayesha Shahid et al.

Summary: Cultivating photosynthetic microbes in city wastewater can help achieve environmental sustainability by removing pollutants, transforming nutrients into bioproducts, and fixing atmospheric carbon. Optimizing growth conditions for filamentous cyanobacterium Plectonema terebrans BERC10 led to enhanced biomass productivity, especially under summer conditions with wastewater-derived alkalinity. The cyanobacterium showed potential for producing carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and phycobilins, which could be extracted and converted into biofuels like biodiesel.

Impact of wastewater cultivation on pollutant removal, biomass production, metabolite biosynthesis, and carbon dioxide fixation of newly isolated cyanobacteria in a multiproduct biorefinery paradigm

Ayesha Shahid et al.

Summary: The study explored the impact of wastewater cultivation on growth yield, pollutant removal capacity, and biosynthesis of high-value metabolites in newly isolated cyanobacteria. The results showed that under wastewater cultivation conditions, these strains exhibited increased biomass production, efficient removal of suspended organic matter, total nitrogen, and phosphorus, as well as production of valuable metabolites such as proteins, lipids, and phycobilins. Furthermore, the strains demonstrated the potential to be used as feedstock for an integrated biorefinery utilizing urban wastewater as a low-cost growth medium.
