Naturally illuminated photobioreactors for resource recovery from piggery and chicken-processing wastewaters utilising purple phototrophic bacteria

Tim Hulsen et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the potential of utilizing anaerobic purple phototrophic bacteria to produce single cell protein from piggery and chicken processing wastewater. The harvested biomass has high protein contents and can be used as a high-quality feed. The biofilm reactors showed efficient removal of COD, N, and P, with high productivities.

Stepwise treatment of undiluted raw piggery wastewater, using three microalgal species adapted to high ammonia

Sang-Ah Lee et al.

Summary: This study utilized three strains of microalgae, evolved through adaptive evolution, to treat raw piggery wastewater without dilution. The treatment process involved three stepwise processes to efficiently remove various pollutants in the wastewater, achieving high removal efficiencies for phosphorus, COD, and ammonia.

Cultivation of Microalgae in Media Added of Emergent Pollutants and Effect on Growth, Chemical Composition, and Use of Biomass to Enzymatic Hydrolysis

Alan Rempel et al.

Summary: The study found that microalgae showed resistance to emerging pollutants at concentrations below 100 mg/L, exhibiting a higher growth adaptability within this concentration range. Additionally, emerging pollutants influenced the protein and carbohydrate content of microalgae biomass to some extent.

Innovative operational strategies in photosynthetic biogas upgrading in an outdoors pilot scale algal-bacterial photobioreactor

David Marin et al.

Summary: Three innovative operational strategies were evaluated to improve the quality of biomethane in an outdoors pilot scale photobioreactor interconnected to an external absorption unit, successfully achieving effective removal of CO2 and H2S. The study found that the concentrations of CO2 and CH4 in biomethane varied under different strategies tested, demonstrating the effectiveness of these innovative approaches in enhancing biogas quality.

Valorization of swine wastewater in a circular economy approach: Effects of hydraulic retention time on microalgae cultivation

Carolina Ferrari Silveira et al.

Summary: This study investigated the cultivation of microalgae for swine wastewater treatment with different hydraulic retention times (HRTs). A consortium of microalgae and bacteria showed satisfactory removal of pollutants, with HRT=12 days providing a healthier culture of photosynthesizing organisms and high proportions of carbohydrates and proteins in the biomass. The results suggest a valorization route for high-value compounds to return to pig farming for nutrient supplementation and water cleaning, contributing to water footprint reduction and sustainability in the pig farming production chain. Further economic and environmental analysis is recommended for large-scale implementation and technical feasibility research.

Assessment of the performance of an anoxic-aerobic microalgal-bacterial system treating digestate

Andres F. Torres-Franco et al.

Summary: The anoxic-aerobic microalgal-bacterial system showed efficient treatment of synthetic food waste digestate, with 25% and 50% digestate concentrations favoring nitrification-denitrification mechanisms, while undiluted digestate resulted in oxygen limiting conditions.

Purple phototrophic bacteria are outcompeted by aerobic heterotrophs in the presence of oxygen

Gabriel Capson-Tojo et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of different dissolved oxygen concentrations on the performance of enriched purple phototrophic bacteria (PPB) cultures in treating wastewater. The results showed that the presence of oxygen suppressed photoheterotrophic growth of PPB and led to dominant chemoheterotrophy under aerobic conditions. This suggests that PPB cannot outcompete other microbes under aerobic or microaerobic conditions, despite their aerobic capabilities.
