Electrode degradation mechanisms in capacitive deionisation

Adam Giurg et al.

Summary: The study focused on the development and characterization of a carbon electrode for capacitive deionisation (CDI), as well as understanding the degradation processes leading to decline in electrode performance over time. An additional degradation process causing irreversible electrode surface modification reducing salt adsorption capacity was identified, along with the mechanism of electrode surface modification based on the anodic oxygen evolution reaction. A method for preventing or reducing the degradation process was proposed.

Unraveling iron speciation on Fe-biochar with distinct arsenic removal mechanisms and depth distributions of As and Fe

Zibo Xu et al.

Summary: Customizing iron speciation in Fe-biochar is crucial for effective arsenic immobilization. Different iron speciations play distinct roles in As removal, with labile/amorphous-C inducing more reductive-Fe(0) formation leading to efficient As immobilization, while stable/graphitic-C generates more amorphous-Fe resulting in high As removal despite limited Fe(0) content. This study provides insights for the design of multifunctional Fe-biochar for environmental remediation.

Functionalized biochar electrodes for asymmetrical capacitive deionization

Hellen Stephanie et al.

Summary: In this study, activated Douglas-fir biochar was used as a low-cost carbon-based alternative electrode with enhanced salt removal capacity through functional group addition. The functionalized electrodes prepared by Nafion and p-phenylenediamine treatment showed improved performance in capacitive deionization. The asymmetrical cell with Nafion cathode and amine biochar anode demonstrated 54% higher removal capacity compared to the symmetrical cell, showcasing the potential of biochar as an inexpensive and sustainable electrode material for asymmetrical capacitive deionization.
