Coxiella burnetii and Related Tick Endosymbionts Evolved from Pathogenic Ancestors

Amanda E. Brenner et al.

Summary: This study sequenced the genomes of bacteria in the family Coxiellaceae, finding that Coxiella-like endosymbionts are more closely related to the human pathogen C. burnetii than to other CLEs. Most CLE lineages contain both endosymbionts and pathogens, indicating independent evolution from pathogenic Coxiella. Additionally, metabolic pathways critical to the intracellular growth of the human pathogen were identified, suggesting potential approaches for controlling C. burnetii infections.

Prevalence and Molecular Characterization of Coxiella burnetii in Cattle, Goats, and Horses in the Republic of Korea

Hyung-Chul Cho et al.

Summary: This study found that C. burnetii is prevalent in various animals in South Korea, with Korean native goats having the highest infection rate. There are significant differences in infection rates between different animal species. The genetic variation of C. burnetii circulating in South Korea was also identified.

Molecular investigation of tick-borne pathogens in ticks removed from tick-bitten humans in the southwestern region of the Republic of Korea

Mi Seon Bang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the presence of tick-borne pathogens in ticks removed from tick-bitten humans in the southwestern provinces of the Republic of Korea. The findings revealed the detection of spotted fever group (SFG) Rickettsia, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, and Babesia spp. as the most common pathogens carried by ticks, with the identification of three predominant tick species. This study also reported the first detection of R. tamurae and Ca. R. jingxinensis in Korea, contributing to the understanding of tick-borne infections in animals and humans in the ROK.
