Tricuspid Chordae Tendineae Mechanics: Insertion Site, Leaflet, and Size-Specific Analysis and Constitutive Modelling

K. J. Smith et al.

Summary: Tricuspid chordae tendineae are highly organized collageneous tissues, populated with cells throughout their thickness, causing a classic J-shaped nonlinear stress-strain response in uniaxial stretching. Differences in stiffness were found between chordae tendineae from different leaflets, insertion sites, or sizes only at small strains. The Ogden two-parameter model was recommended as it fit the data excellently with minimal parameters required.

Right ventricular myocardial mechanics: Multi-modal deformation, microstructure, modeling, and comparison to the left ventricle

Sotirios Kakaletsis et al.

Summary: This study aims to fill the research gap on the right ventricular myocardium and reveals that it is less stiff in the fiber direction compared to the left ventricular myocardium, displaying non-linear, anisotropic, and tension/compression asymmetric behavior with a direction-dependent Poynting effect. The Holzapfel model successfully fits the data through inverse finite element analysis, and higher-fidelity microstructural data improves predictive ability.

A whole blood thrombus mimic: Constitutive behavior under simple shear

Gabriella P. Sugerman et al.

Summary: A study developed an in-vitro thrombus mimic for research on pulmonary embolism, finding that the mimic exhibits strain-stiffening, a negative Poynting effect, and hysteresis under simple shear. The stiffness of the mimic is not significantly affected by coagulation conditions or blood storage time. The best-fitting model for the mimic is the Ogden model.

Optical coherence tomography and multiphoton microscopy offer new options for the quantification of fibrotic aortic valve disease in ApoE-/- mice

Anett Jannasch et al.

Summary: Aortic valve sclerosis is a common cardiovascular risk marker that may progress to aortic valve stenosis. The use of OCT and MPM can accurately detect early morphological and structural changes in murine aortic valves.

Fracture mechanics of blood clots: Measurements of toughness and critical length scales

Shiyu Liu et al.

Summary: The fracture behavior of human whole blood clots and platelet-poor plasma clots was studied, revealing the important contribution of blood cells to clot fracture, as well as the length scales governing clot fracture. The measured toughness was found to be independent of specimen geometry and loading conditions.
