Effect of Macrolides and β-lactams on Clearance of Bordetella pertussis in the Nasopharynx in Children With Whooping Cough

Yu-Mei Mi et al.

Summary: The study revealed a high resistance rate of Bordetella pertussis isolates to macrolides. Macrolides are recommended as the first-line treatment for pertussis caused by macrolides-sensitive strains, while beta-lactams such as piperacillin can be considered as alternative antibiotics for macrolides-resistant B. pertussis infections.

Oral decontamination with colistin plus neomycin in solid organ transplant recipients colonized by multidrug-resistant Enterobacterales: a multicentre, randomized, controlled, open-label, parallel-group clinical trial

Maria Carmen Farinas et al.

Summary: The study found that oral colistin-neomycin did not reduce MDR-E infections in SOT recipients. Colistin resistance and adverse effects like diarrhea were noted as potential issues during the treatment.

Occurrence and ecological risks of 156 pharmaceuticals and 296 pesticides in seawater from mariculture areas of Northeast China

Ruohan Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the occurrence and ecological risks of 484 compounds in mariculture areas were comprehensively investigated. Certain pesticides and pharmaceuticals were found to pose high risks to marine organisms, highlighting the need for measures to reduce their usage in mariculture activities to protect ocean ecosystems.

Elimination of cephalexin and doxycycline under low frequency ultrasound

Rafael Santiago Cardenas Sierra et al.

Summary: Cephalexin and doxycycline are commonly used antibiotics in various fields, but their excessive consumption has led to their presence in environmental matrices and wastewater treatment plant effluents. This study found that low frequency ultrasonic radiation effectively removed these antibiotics, with operational factors significantly influencing their elimination, and promoting mineralization and reduction of sample toxicity.

The Role of Aquatic Ecosystems (River Tua, Portugal) as Reservoirs of Multidrug-Resistant Aeromonas spp.

Sonia Gomes et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the antimicrobial resistance rates among riverine Aeromonas species in the Tua River, Douro basin. Various antibiotics were tested against Aeromonas isolates, revealing high resistance rates and the potential risk of transmission of multi- and pan-resistant bacteria between animals and humans in aquatic ecosystems.

Streptococcus iniae biofilm formation enhances environmental persistence and resistance to antimicrobials and disinfectants

Taylor I. Heckman et al.

Summary: The globally distributed bacterium Streptococcus iniae is responsible for outbreaks of disease in economically important freshwater and marine fish species, but our understanding of its transmission and infection dynamics remains incomplete. This study found that S. iniae has the ability to form resilient biofilms, providing an effective mechanism for its persistence in the environment. Further research on controlling this pathogen is necessary.
