Metaproteomics Approach and Pathway Modulation in Obesity and Diabetes: A Narrative Review

Francesco Maria Calabrese et al.

Summary: Low-grade inflammatory diseases have been found to be associated with metabolic disturbances, such as gut microbiota dysbiosis. Metaproteomics has been used in the past decade to investigate protein composition in specific healthy and pathological conditions. This review applied a rigorous protocol to select 10 metaproteomics studies aiming at investigating obesity and diabetes, providing insights into microbial and human metaproteome alterations and metabolic patterns in individuals affected by diabetes and obesity. However, the lack of metaproteomic data limits objective considerations, and the establishment of specific databases and standardized analysis protocols is needed to further enhance our knowledge on these prevalent diseases.

Aging, Frailty, and the Microbiome-How Dysbiosis Influences Human Aging and Disease

John P. Haran et al.

Summary: The human gut microbiome, consisting of bacteria, protozoa, fungi, and viruses, plays essential roles in protecting, metabolizing, and maintaining human health. Imbalances within the intestinal microbial community structure are increasingly recognized as being involved in disease processes across various organ systems, particularly due to untoward inflammatory responses. Recent advances in understanding the microbiome's role in aging have opened the door for potential novel therapeutics targeting a less dysbiotic microbiome to prevent or treat age-related diseases.

Obesity, Early Life Gut Microbiota, and Antibiotics

Alyssa T. Wilkins et al.

Summary: Obesity is a major public health concern and its risk can be increased by dysbiosis of the gut microbiota, especially in early life. The use of antibiotics, while essential, can also disrupt the gut microbiota and increase the risk of obesity, particularly when used in early life. It is important to consider the long-term adverse effects of antibiotic treatment on host health and explore alternative interventions, such as prebiotics, to mitigate metabolic risk.

Gut microbiome pattern reflects healthy ageing and predicts survival in humans

Tomasz Wilmanski et al.

Summary: The study finds that as individuals age, the gut microbiome becomes increasingly unique, with this uniqueness strongly associated with microbially produced amino acid derivatives in the bloodstream. Healthy older individuals continue to show microbial drift towards a unique compositional state, while less healthy individuals do not. Retaining high levels of Bacteroides dominance or having a low gut microbiome uniqueness measure predicts decreased survival in a 4-year follow-up.
