Detection of Norovirus Recombinant GII.2[P16] Strains in Oysters in Thailand

Leera Kittigul et al.

Summary: Human norovirus, particularly GII.4 variants, is a common cause of acute gastroenteritis worldwide. Recent outbreaks have been attributed to a novel GII.17[P17] strain and a recombinant GII.2[P16] strain. This study detected norovirus in oyster samples using PCR and identified different strains including GII.17 Kawasaki and recombinant GII.2[P16]. The findings highlight the need for continued surveillance and prevention of norovirus gastroenteritis.

Human Calicivirus Typing tool: A web-based tool for genotyping human norovirus and sapovirus sequences

Roman L. Tatusov et al.

Summary: The web-based HuCaT tool is able to rapidly and accurately genotype human noroviruses and sapoviruses, achieving 100% accuracy by comparing query sequences to curated reference sequences. It is much faster than other methods such as BLAST or phylogenetic analyses, making it an effective tool for genotyping of these viruses.

EHEC O111:H8 strain and norovirus GII.4 Sydney [P16] causing an outbreak in a daycare center, Brazil, 2019

Liliana Cruz Spano et al.

Summary: This study investigated an outbreak of diarrhea, hemorrhagic colitis, and hemolytic uremic syndrome at a daycare center in southeastern Brazil. It identified an uncommon stx2a+EHEC O111:H8 strain and the most recent pandemic norovirus strain GII.4 Sydney [P16]. These findings highlight the importance of surveillance and diagnosis of multiple enteric pathogens by public health authorities, especially during outbreaks.

Genome-wide analyses of human noroviruses provide insights on evolutionary dynamics and evidence of coexisting viral populations evolving under recombination constraints

Kentaro Tohma et al.

Summary: The study conducted large-scale genome-wide analyses on archival samples collected since the 1970s, sequencing nearly full-length new genomes from 281 historical noroviruses. The findings revealed new insights on diversifying selection and restrictions in recombination mechanisms, contributing to the understanding of norovirus evolution and potentially aiding in the prevention of norovirus infections in the future.
