Effect of ultrasonic peening treatment on the fatigue behaviors of a magnesium alloy up to very high cycle regime

Yao Chen et al.

Summary: Ultrasonic peening treatment (UPT) on magnesium alloy alters the surface crack initiation sites while keeping the crack initiation mechanism consistent, resulting in a single-faceted crack morphology. Microcracks initially form as Mode II cracks within grains, but then deflect to Mode I cracks outside grains, forming fine granular areas. The study also suggests that crack type is another key factor in the formation of fine granular areas.

Microstructure and fatigue crack growth behavior in welding joint of Al-Mg alloy

Haigen Jian et al.

Summary: The microstructure and fatigue crack growth behavior of Al-Mg alloy welding joint by metal inert-gas welding (MIG) were studied. The welded joint showed heterogeneous microstructure with equiaxed cellular dendritic crystals in the weld zone. Fatigue crack origins tended to generate at positions with bubbles, grain boundaries, interface between hard phase particles and matrix, and holes of coarse impurity particles.

Electrochemical and corrosion behaviors of the wrought Mg-Y-Zn based alloys with high Y/Zn mole ratios

Xuan Liu et al.

Summary: The corrosion resistance of Mg-Y-Zn based alloys is dependent on the adjusted Y/Zn mole ratio affecting the arrangement of LPSO phase. Increasing the Y/Zn mole ratio decreases the size of LPSO phase plates and leads to the precipitation of Mg24Y5 phase, which in turn greatly increases the corrosion rate of the alloys. This is attributed to the decreasing size of LPSO phase plates acting as cathodes, further increasing hydrogen evolution kinetics.

The effect of microstructure on the plastic strain localization and fatigue crack initiation in cast Mg-8Gd-3Y-0.5Zr alloy

Zhiguang Ding et al.

Summary: In T4 alloys, the dense and uniform PSBs help alleviate strain localization within and among grains, while in T6 alloys, the sparse and inhomogeneous PSBs lead to concentrated deformation at specific areas of the GBs. The crack initiation life of T4 alloys is longer than that of T6 alloys due to the difference in strain distribution and saturation strains between the two types of alloys.

Loading-direction dependence of fatigue behavior of rolled Mg alloy containing {10-12} twins

Jeong Hun Lee et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the low-cycle fatigue characteristics of a rolled Mg alloy with {10-12} twins vary significantly depending on the loading direction on the rolling plane. The contribution of the initial {10-12} twins to strain accommodation during cyclic deformation in different loading directions is influenced by the angle difference between the twinned region and the applied loading direction. As a result, the fatigue life of the pre-twinned alloy varies with the loading direction, with RD > 45RD > TD.

On the exceptionally high ductility of Mg-2Zn-0.3Ca-0.2Ce-0.1Mn alloy

Dexin Zhao et al.

Summary: The newly developed Mg-2Zn-0.3Ca-0.2Ce-0.1Mn (ZXEM2000) wrought alloy exhibits exceptionally high tensile ductility. The high ductility of ZXEM2000 is attributed to weaker texture, fine grain size, reduced twinning, and increased cross-slip frequency of c +a dislocation. These findings provide important insights for improving ductility of magnesium alloys in future alloy design and development.
